Like the previous post, I still got a 95 S-10 Ive had since 98, and a 94 Dodge 1500 both with 5 speeds. I use the Dodge to haul my 16ft trailer when I need to. But both maybe see 50 miles a year now. Had them too long now and aint worth anything to get rid of.

My dad had a 77 that he bought new. I loved the old short wheelbase Broncos...They were so much heavier than they looked.

I may have met him. My first job over here was as a bartender at the Sheridan Kaserne. I worked all the bars except the Enlisted Men's Club. It was the only place to watch live sports for us civilians that couldn't pick up AFN. The old days...

Think Toyota has a way to switch to manual but not sure - all new trucks seem to have issues - mine included - would go back to the 3 in a tree I learned to drive on in a heartbeat right now

Happy Easter and welcome to Germany and Niedersachsen. Down here we have it a lttle better regarding travel: Austria in 40 minutes, Italy in 3 hours, Switzerland in 1, etc. Asia is one flight away. But you're close to the sea, and Hamburg is a really cool city to visit. Berlin isn't far from you either.

I don't know how your German is, but you can't underestimate the importance of being able to understand what's going on around you. The Volkshochschule is a great resource for this. Is your wife German?

I shouldn't do this, and we'll probably never meet, but if you want any tips or for whatever reason, contact me at razorsteven@t-online.de.

Thanks! My German is Scheisse right now. The wife too. She’s bilingual but French and English. We never really expected a move to Germany. We are planning to do some classes as I’ve already come to realize we need to know the language. We will for sure be planing a trip down south at some point and would love to meet up with you guys. There’s a few questionable characters on here who know both the wife and me who can vouch for us . I have your email and will drop you a message soon.

I never had a reason to learn. My first car was a hand-me-down 1992 Ford Taurus automatic.

What’s really messed up- and you would know better than i would- is that i bet they still tack on an extra few hundred dollars, or even an extra couple thousand bucks- for the automatic transmission.. when in fact the automatic transmission is now the de facto standard option anyway, yet they still charge more for it .

Back in the early 90's a K1500 Chevy extended cab with a manual got something like a $2000 discount, listed on the window sticker, beyond the savings for ordering the optional auto. They were trying to boost sales of manuals for fuel economy numbers to please the government as I recall. That was a big discount back then.

Manuals have never been an option on extended nor crew cab 1/2 ton Silverados since they came out in 1999. They discontinued manuals behind the Duramax somewhere around 2007 iirc.

Would love to say hello. Pro tip: listen to the radio, especially news programs because of the pronunciation. Don't fall into the seductive trap of consuming English-speaking media all the time. When I came here there was one newspaper (Times Herald Tribune), and books in English were really expensive and I was broke. Luckily I got a job where everyone spoke German and that helped immensely, plus a course at the Volkshochschule. My German would be much better now had the internet - and my lack of discipline - not emerged when it did. I've been here a long time so I'm fluent, but it could be better. Good luck, I wouldn't want to learn German in Saxony, Bavarian was bad enough!

One last thing and I'll stop hijacking this thread: Don't wait too long to exchange your driver's license for a German one. I almost did and would have had to pay for the course and license - about 2000 Euros today. I'm pretty sure you have a year from the date you got your first resident permit.
