I'm attempting to replace an old, partially broken waterfall faucet on a whirlpool tub.

The existing setup has soldered copper pipes supplying water to both valve stems, as well as soldered copper pipes supplying water from the valves to the faucet. It's about 20 years old and the fixtures can't simply be changed out without reworking the pipes.

My first thought is to just cut out the faucet and pipes supplying the faucet, then unscrewing the valve stems. I believe I should be able to screw in the new valve stems and use flex hoses to supply the new faucet. If for some reason I can't simply screw in the new valves, my plan is to cut the pipes and use compression joints.

Plan A: copper hot/cold lines with valve stems screwed in, flex hoses from stems to faucet, and if that doesn't work,

Plan B: copper hot/cold lines with compression joints to valve stems, flex hoses from stems to faucet

Is there any compelling reason that I should not do this? Will this proposed setup be terrible/janky compared to the existing 100% soldered copper work?

I would go with the flex hoses from the stems to compression from the start. Never had a problem with it.

I would resolder with copper. I don't think tiny faucet supply tubes will get you the flow rate you want to fill that tub without waiting an hour.

Find a buddy who has a handle on it. 90% of it is fitting and cleaning/fluxing the joints inside and out and not overheating the joint.

Stop and let a pro do it.

If you frick it up it will cost a lot more than getting it done right.

I am in a field that deals with compression joints a good bit and can tell you that eventually, they leak. it may be 50 years, but sooner or later, that polymer will stiffen up and start dripping. I'd use them to get out of a pickle, but in your current situation I would just find someone who can sweat the joints for you.
