Any OT vets ever deploy to Romania?

My son is slated to go there in a few months. Still kinda blows my old mind because in my day (the 80s), Romania was in the Warsaw Pact.
Now my son will be there training with them. My question is, have any of my fellow vets ever been there? Any advice I should give my son?
FWIW, he’s infantry and will be in the field most of the time he’s there from what I understand.

I'm envious of him. Hopefully he will get some down time to go out, meet the locals, and immerse a little in Eastern European culture...... and dem womez!
An American soldier in Eastern Europe? He's about to have a ton of, well you know, thrown at him.

I've been there ... not on active duty. We vacationed there with friends a few years ago.
Beautiful country with great people and excellent food.
He's probably going to stage out of the Black Sea Garrison ... I forget the name of the air base that it's attached to. But they'll give him some R&R time while he's there.
I know we've been pulling a lot of garrisoned troops outta there with downsizing lately so, no doubt, he's with one of the designated RDF units being trained to deploy there if needed under the new arrangement.
He'll have a good time. Some beautiful women there ... drop dead gorgeous, everywhere.

I’ve been there, not as a military dude though. Bucharest was a lot like NOLA but cleaner. You can find trouble if you’re looking for it but the food and culture are incredible.
The people there are straight to the point and respectable. They don’t put up with bs and if you smile they think you’re being deceptive.
Definitely an under rated place to visit.

I'm in Bucharest and Ploiesti often. I'm traveling to Ploiesti in 2 weeks. Nice people in Romania. Shopping, eating out etc are all very affordable there. They still use RON as currency. Definitely has that Eastern European feel about it still.

He will be doing very important and unique work for his country. I would encourage him to bear this in mind at all times while there in Romania - This is the Front Line in Europe. Russia is right there, looking for a soft spot and an opportunity to neutralize or minimize the influence and military projection power of that Romanian port on the Black Sea called Constanta.
If he is in that area around Constanta, then he is doing "front line" work, and, as such, he should be on his most professional and serious attitude and behavior.
The US military is making a lasting impression on our friends and enemies in that area right now. Your Soldier son can help make that impression one that reflects the Pride and Professionalism of the US Army Infantry.
I know that it is fun to have fun sometimes, but, this work he'll be doing isn't like the work that the Soldiers in Korea or Germany are doing - your son's work is more important that that. I would encourage him to take it very seriously, to be totally professional and completely "business-like" so that the Romanians see our people as total professionals and total experts at warfighting - real Hard Core Soldiers.
We want the Romanians to see us as the best Soldiers and Warfighters in the world so that they will look at us and say to themselves - I WANT TO BE JUST AS TOUGH AS THE AMERICANS ARE.
That's my 2 cents.

My son was there a couple of years ago with the 101st, also infantry.
They trained with Romanians half the time, did stupid shite the rest. He was able to go off base most days after they were released and on weekends. Also had some long weekends they were able to travel and see the country. I wish my deployments had been like that.
They lived in giant tents with 1 company per, so no privacy and always trying to sleep around others making noise got old for him.
Overall it was a good experience for him.
My advice would be to immerse himself in the culture as much as possible. I worked with Romanians in Afghanistan and they are as anti-communist as possible. Also genuinely kind and grateful people. And many of the women are smoke shows as has been pointed out.

It’s kinda surreal to think that almost 40 years ago the army sent me to the front line in West Germany. Now my son is going, but the front line has moved to Romania.

Constanta Romania on the Black Sea. European tourist town during the summer. Had a great time. Picked up one chick at 2 PM. By 5 PM she called me primitive and split. By 8 PM at a local night club I picked up another one and she took me home for the night. Both were very attractive. They definitely brought out the animal in me.
