Great Pyrenees. Do not get one unless you own a farm or a ranch or want to ruin your life

Faint praise.

So is this-

On our 3rd standard poodle all from same blood lines. All have been smart for a dog, but personalities varied a lot. One was great athlete going impressively vertical after Frisbees and trying to catch birds in flight. Another could open gates by operating the latch with his paws. The current one has no special talent but is the prettiest (like the pictured dogs) and seems to know it.

All have been around 50lbs... large enough to respect. None have shed. All healthy until the end around 13 years. All great companions, easy with kids and bark like a much bigger dog when a stranger shows up or an unfamiliar vehicle pulls up.

Jack Russell- extremely bright. Highly recommend as long as you can deal with the shedding.

Not mine, but my 1 of my brothers 6 dogs. Can't figure out the breed as he was a rescue, but he is the color of a silkie but is 2 foot tall and weighs 18-20 lbs. Maybe the smartest dog I've ever been around. He is the ring leader of the pack and 1 of those is a malinois. He smiles for the camera and when you put the dogs out in the backyard (fenced in) he will be standing out front before you can open the garage to leave, then he sits on the front porch all day waiting for you to come home. If he wants all the other dogs off the back porch he'll just jump up barking and run to the steps to watch all the other dogs tear out to the back 40 barkingb thier heads off, then he lays down in one of their spots. He also smiles for the camera every time you take his picture. My wife has 2Not mine, but my 1 of my brothers 6 dogs. A trainer told me the difference between a Mal and a GSd was such: YOu throw a ball off a cliff, and the MAL follows it off the cliff. The GSD will stop, pace and look for a way down to get the ball.
Same thing in protection work. A Mal is a missle with no hesitation but watch a Shepherd as they approach the target. They will slow just slightly to get their feet under them before launching. Karma's sire would chase a ball into a wall head-on. Karma will calculate the rebound. Freaking geometry expert.

Is it possible to get one without bad hips?
Absolutely. As RogerTheShrubber said. Get a working line dog. Not a show line. Pay attention to the pedigree of the sire and dam and don't even consider a pup if both parent's hips and elbows are not certified. I'd even go further to recommend an import. And for goodness sakes, don't fall into the "massive Shepherd" fallacy. They were never intended to be massive. Males should be 80lbs or less, females in the 60s.

I kind of lucked into my pup. Her pedigree is amazing. Dam is daughter of Cuba V (Police K9, USPCA Winner, 5x Georgia K-9 Task Force Champion) and her sire's line is Czech origin with the Czech version of Schutzhund background in both his parents.

This isn't very easy to sort out like it is for hounds. I'm having a hard time with it, short of spending a few thousand on a dog which I'm not doing.

I have a McNab border collie. They still have the brains but they don't have the drive to do things every waking hour of the day. They can turn off. And they have short hair. Our dog is way smarter than I am. Unfortunately he's around 13 and has health issues.

I have two shepherd mutts. One of them is incredibly intelligent, one of them is probably the dumbest dog I've ever had

If they were on the alignment chart the smart one would be lawful evil. The dumb one chaotic good

Toy Poodle- We've had him for a little over a year. Super smart, protective of his house, lazy when he needs to be, doesn't shed at all, great with people, only 8 lbs and he doesn't tear up anything but his toys.
