Any of you ever read Barry and the Boys?

I recently watched American Made and wanted to know more about his life and operations. I was at LSU when he was assassinated on February 19, 1986. So far a very interesting read.

I am fascinated with the 80s cocaine smuggling activities and the resulting war on drugs. I loved Cocaine cowboys, 30 for 30 two Escobars, Narcos, Mark Bowden’ s books Doctor Dealer and Killing Pablo Escobar. i saw that American Made was coming out, and i decided to cough up the $100 and bought a copy of Barry & the Boys. The plan was to read it before the movie came out. I got 1/3 through the book and put it down. It’s a difficult read. Too much detail and too many names introduced. Plus it seems they keep repeating the same stories over and over. I plan to trudge through it and finish it. Finally watched American Made recently and was somewhat disappointed.

I’m also fascinated with the drug smuggling activities of the 80’s, especially because I grew up during that time.
I felt that the movie left out out so much and didn’t quite tell the whole story, (more of the Hollywood version) that’s why I wanted to read a book about him. I just started it, but I hope I can get through the whole thing and it will keep me interested. I read the reviews on a few others and this one seemed to have the best reviews. We shall see....

There is an interesting bit of LSU trivia about Barry Seal's shooting at the Salvation Army Halfway House. Billy Cannon Sr. was also in residence there on Airline in Baton Rouge finishing up his counterfeiting sentence. As I recall, The Morning Advocate interviewed Cannon at the time but he didn't have much to add to the story so far as the shooting incident. Would have been interesting to know what he and Seal talked during their stay. They must have been rivals in high school (BR High and Istrouma)?

If you're interested in all that, I highly, highly recommend "Smoke and Mirrors" by Dan Baum. Many people think he was killed due to writing it.
