There’s a difference between ripping me off and making a fair profit - car dealers are know for ripping you off. My BIL sold cars and quit bc all they did was rip people off.

F&I mgr
I've had way worse problems with the finance person than the salesman with the last two vehicles we've purchased. It seems like the number of items they try to pressure you into buying on the back end is getting just stupid.
We brought my daughter along with us for when we were buying her a used car so she could see how the process works. The a-hole tried to hard sale us on a whole list of things and became pretty pissed when we wouldn't buy his warranty. He even said with a snarky attitude " well I hope you car doesn't breakdown on you". He was an arse about a few other things so we called and talked to the owner of the dealership about him. He was very understanding and said we were the second person that week that had called to complain about him.

I've never seen so many people worry about $2,000 plus or minus in my life.

Probably wasn’t me, I haven’t done F&I since early 2000’s

arkup depends on vehicle, & manufacturer. Group I work for has Chevy, Buick, GMC, & Hummer, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, & Ram, Lincoln, Ford, & Toyota, and several hundred preowned vehicles representing several more brands. There is no set % markup, I.e. 10%, but I’d be more than happy to show our cost on the unit, manufacturer’s incentives, and negotiate from there.
RichJ, I’ve always wondered why car manufacturers and dealerships don’t just put their GPM on a vehicle FOB delivered to dealership and sell them? No negotiation. This is what it cost type transactions. I remember Saturn tried that strategy and failed. I know some people like to wheel and deal, but some don’t and just want a fair price because all good deals are a two way street. Obviously there is a lot of overhead in keeping the doors open and profitable at a dealership so I’m assuming it’s to make the most gross profit dollars as possible. Having said that it seems like a dealership could reduce it’s overhead by reducing the size of its staff.

Very narrow margin.

I sell these. Just as a car guy, they are great, objectively, like a more stylish RAV4 Or Outback. We sell a lot of them and I have yet to see a comeback or customer issue in 5 months. It’s mechanically identical to a CX-5, which means it’s got the same engine and transmission we’ve been using and updating since 2013. Tried and true.

Since people will be getting their tax refunds so, this is a bad time to look for a deal. If you can wait until April or May, you may have a better chance at getting a deal.

I figured you would just buy the dealership and give him a car

Bought one for my kid a year and a half ago. Looked at all the usual small suvs. Price was great, Paretti was a very easy buying experience. And I really like the car. Been to dealer twice for free oil changes - no bs sales tactics involved.
Overall I am very happy with the purchase and would own more Mazdas.
ETA - way less expensive for a new Cx-5 than a used RAV4 or CRV. Toyota and Honda are proud as frick of those suvs

What’s the % markup on your cars? Need to negotiate one for my dad and don’t want to be ripped off.
From Confessions of a Car Salesman...
1. A Dealer will never sell you a car at a loss no matter what they tell you or show you.
2. You will never get the lowest acceptable price to the dealer if you do not start lower than that number. Never let them know "how much you willing to spend." Stick to that number as long as they are still talking to you. You may have to walk a couple times and have other options at other dealers in play. I tend to start the bidding at 25% below sticker. I know I wont get it but after a couple counters I can see where they are willing to go.
3. Cut the salesman out of the discussion if you can. The salesman has no power to make a sale. Only the Sales Manager does. If the salesman balks at taking your offer to the Manager then leave or do it yourself. The negotiation the salesman is doing is helping his sale commission if they still get one.
4. Get it in your mind that the dealer is going to make money on the sale. You are just affecting how much.

There are so many resources available that you can get an accurate value of vehicle. It's not like diamonds where the average person has no clue what they are looking at and how much its worth.
I'm a vehicle wholesaler and I get asked this question a lot. I always use the example, let's say my uncle passed away and left me his car and it's worth 20K. Should I sell it to someone for 5K just to make 5K or sell it for what's it worth.
Do some research, and if you like it and it's a good car, buy it. People on here freak out when it comes to car purchases.
