So the kids getting into the car on their own is his fault?
I mean he obviously should’ve been paying attention to them but I don’t really see how this is like all the other kids getting locked in hot car situations

If you open the article you’ll see that they got in the truck on their own.
He was napping for 4-5 hours tho, which is irresponsible with two toddlers.

I’m as far from a bleeding heart as their is but this dude can’t be charged for murder. I also wouldn’t charge him with child neglect because what good does it do now? He has two dead kids on his conscience.

As you yourself posted - it happens every year. So unless you propose every summer a whole lot of parents are murdering their own children by leaving them in the car intentionally - then something in human psychology clearly allows this to happen regularly (it has to do with going on autopilot into your "routine" and forgetting that you have the kid that day).

I agree with this. I once saw someone post an idea that I thought was really good. When you strap the kid into the back seat, remove your left shoe and put it in the back seat.
I have a question on this particular case though. If the kids were able to get back into the vehicle, why couldn't they get back out?

First of all what this guy did was negligent IMO for leaving 2 toddlers unattended for 5 hours. There was a # of ways they could have hurt themselves in that extended amount of time.
But back on the hot car issue, start having multiple kids and you can understand how it could happen. Let me tell you a real life situation that thankfully happened in early spring. The wife and I and our 2 kids went to store to buy materials/plants to redo our yard for spring time.
We park the car at home and start to unload, kid #1 really needs to go to bathroom and kid #2 is sleeping in her car seat. Wife hurries child #1 into the house, while I start unloading the garden stuff.
About 10 mins go by and I say to myself where is child #2 then I remember and a fear comes over me. I run outside to find my daughter still inside sleeping away. It was 70 degrees outside and the car was still cool inside so obviously everything was fine but I just wanted to share how easy it is to get distracted allowing something like this to happen.

Forgetting that a kid or dog is in my car is a nightmare that I've had over and over.

Couple thoughts:
1. Opening the door from outside is different from inside so maybe they couldn’t figure it out
2. Child lock was on where doors can be opened from outside but not inside
3. Kids might not have realized it until it was too late and actually passed out while playing
