that was absolutely stupid. where its he functionality in being able to strap yourself to a car and pull it down a track with 5 other people (or in the case of the one chick , half arse it the whole way while others are doing the work and then get yourself run over by the car. she was probably one of those people posting Facebook updates constantly about her WOD and box. lol

Pretty damn stupid, right? And its sad. When xfit first started, it was about functionality, and it worked. I believe that they got so wrapped up in their uniqueness that when other programs started following suit, xfit hadto get more outlandish to set themselves apart. So you get goofy shite like people running, strapped to a police car, all in the name of elite fitness.

It's beyond dumb. I do crossfit because for the moment it is helping me achieve my fitness goals, and it works for me right now. That could change down the road as I'm sure it will, but there are always people that take things (anything) to extremes.

When I did crossfit, I really enjoyed it. But I have moved past it. Sometimes I'll throw a crossfit style WOD into the mix if I feel like I need a kick in the arse. It can be just plain fun to do it. But just because one crossfits doesn't make them elite. I think that holier than thou mentality is what turns a lot of people off.

From what I read this was in competition, not a typical CF daily class. Evidently this movement was like the 9 or 10 exercise out of 11. So he was already worn down from the earlier stages. Seems like poor planning but I guarantee you he knows the risks by now

It was a freak accident that happened when he was using a light weight for him. The guy has been Olympic weightlifting since 8th grade. Has nothing to do with crossfit.

bullshite! It was a Crossfit event! And you know those events are designed to fatigue you to the max yet still try to lift a weight over your head. He failed not because he couldn't lift that amount of weight, he failed because of extreme exhaustion and still being asked to lift the weight till failure.

I don't hate Crossfit, it's just stupid to lift over your head when that fatigued.

Doing overhead snatches or just regular powerclean at the end of a workout (or competition) is ridiculous.

Not to get political, but this is why young, healthy people need insurance.

Agreed BUT I don't want to pay for insurance for those who are doing things with their bodies that is dangerous by design...I also can't believe you aren't insured when competing in these events or at least forced to show proof of insurance before competing. The events are design to make you fail!

Agreed. But, the real problem was that THE LIFTING PLATFORM WAS NOT FREE OF MATERIAL WHICH MAY IMPACT A LIFTER'S ABILITY TO SAFELY DROP A LIFT. That is the sticking point.

Unless you're special forces or a competitive athlete I just don't see how short term benefits outweigh the long term wear and tear... Plenty of other ways to get very strong/fit with significantly less risk of long term issues than doing snatch/cleans, etc.

exactly this. it is NOT practical and damaging in the long term.

Sounds like he either had a pre-existing issue in his spine or he was overdoing his routine. Either way, sounds like this was a risk for him no matter what exercise regimen he performed.

Sad story all the like.

On a side note, here is a reason that one WOULD crossfit...not sure I could concentrate with her next to me.

He dropped the barbell from a snatch position. The barbell flew back and hit a stack of weights behind him. The barbell bounced off of the stack of weights and hit him in the back. Unless he's Superman with a bad back, this had nothing to do with a preexisting condition, and everything to do with negligence on the part of the gym owner.

I see some injured backs or soon to be in that video

ETA: If these people are paying money to some gym, specialized or not, for goodness sake teach good form.

Yikes! That was horrible. That's Dave Castro doing that horrible deadlift. He's pretty weak, which I find very amusing considering the high opinion he has of himself. If you feel like reading about more of Dave's tomfoolery, google "Dave Castro crossfit black box summit" and read Robb Wolf's story. Mr. Castro singlehandedly chased off every good SME crossfit ever had.

I believe it is pretty effective. I am 44 and fairly healthy but need to be in better shape with young children. I go to crossfit. I think the place I go to is pretty boring in crossfit world. Movements are basic, and although you do get absolutely exhausted, there are not compound movements or oly lifts done til exhaustion or at the end of the workouts.

Hell I think a lot of crap is stupid that people get hurt doing, and I think there a lot of cool things that people get hurt doing( I don't think pulling a car is one of them)....I don't think they were pulling the car to help themselves get in shape, I think in their bizarre world, they were pulling the car for fun.

People snow ski for fun, it is an entirely unnecessary activity, people die and injure themselves at alarmingly high rates. No one posts vids of them wiping out.

Something about crossfit pisses people off.
