Another dog question..

I came here the other night with a picture to identify a dog. I was looking for a boxer. I was able to locate another person who wants to actually give one away (and this one seems to be a pure boxer). The problem is this dog has heart worms. Owner said she got the dog 4 months ago (dog is 3) and the owners before hadn't taken care of the dog. She took it to vet and it tested positive for heart worms. She got the dog up to date on shots but couldn't afford heart worm treatment.
What am I looking at if I get this dog as far as cost of treatment, etc.

Go to the vet. Get a real answer.

Well there is no vet open and I was hoping someone here went through, or knows, about it that could help.

I want to say I paid between $350-500, but that was around 8 years ago.

Is there medication you can buy yourself to give? Or is that just the preventative meds?

I'm really not trying to be a jerk, but can you not wait until a vet is open to make a call? Heartworms can be a really tricky thing. Can be nothing if you catch it early or it could be deadly.
I'm a sap when it comes to dogs, so I can't give a practical answer. But I bet a vet could put an actual number on it. That was my only point.

Spent a little over $1000 two years ago getting a 100lb lab treated for them and that ain't counting the follow ups and having to treat him like a king for about 6 weeks

A lot of factors go into the cost. Size of the dog, age, health, and what stage of heartworms. Putting an exact cost is impossible. can range anywhere from 500 to 1500. You can give them heartworm meds even if they have them. It actually helps prevent them from getting any worse then they already are.
Treatment requires that the dog be kept calm, not a lot of running, and playing, and keep them in a cool environment. Some of that is gonna be pretty difficult to do with a young Boxer.

Slow kill method is typically 2 months of preventative & 1 month of medication cycled for at least a year. Make sure that the vet will give you Doxy as the medication & not the generic. Costs depends on weight of dog (dosage). Right now we are paying 50.00 every 3rd month but a friend is paying close to 200.00 (beagle vs lab mix).

Take to vet and see. Won't really know how bad it is until they xray the dog.
It will be $500 or so BUT it's not all at once.
