Personally as someone who did not go through the education curriculum I think teachers should start at 50k
I also think outside of Primary School Teachers that all teachers should have a bachelors degree in what they teach with a minor in education.

I think even primary teachers should have some focus in their education besides what is already provided. Raise the standards for teachers and attract better teachers.

Who is paying the extra cash?

I'm not going to live somewhere and pay double in school district taxes so a chick who is straight out of school and less educated than I am can turn on a new movie every Friday for their 50 minutes of class.

Thats more than the average college grad. Average teacher pay in AK is around 70k (non special ed)

Special ed pay is higher.

Coaches are the ones who really put the extra work in. When teachers complain about a meeting until 430, the entire football staff laughes. "4:30?! That's an OFF day for us."

Correct, but we are also specializing teachers now as well. Sort of like we do with other professions. If you want to teach math, you must have a bachelors in math with a minor in education, etc....

So therefore no more teachers who only teach from a book, they would actually know the material and be able to teach it in many different ways. They would actually enjoy the subject and want to teach it.

This has been a thing for quite a while. I received my degree in 08, began in 03, and this type of degree had already been well established.

Since when? Teachers go to school for education degrees then choose which Praxis they want to take in order to teach. That is not specialization, that is more general studies and then just taking a secondary test.

Some places. Juneau is expensive. Rest of the State is fairly reasonable. I know some HS teachers who make 80k. If you teach in the bush, you usually get housing and meals paid, plus COLA.

I'm guessing it also has to do with how remote the state is relative to the Lower 48 and the resulting lack of prospective teachers to fill positions.

Sorry started drinking at 4...

I've been an advocate of more technology, more training, and having teachers actually have a real degree for awhile.

After seeing the education curriculum it is really a joke.

Teachers should never bitch about their salary considering the archaic pensions they get.

Nah there is a line of teachers applying to work here. Strong union though that buys off the legislature and school boards.
