Some states have legalized euthenasia. If you decide to give up the fight against cancer or something similar, they give you a pill you can take that will end your life. There is also a clinic in Switzerland where Americans can go, pay a hefty fee, and be euthenized.
It would be weird to celebrate something like that with a final family night out.
Guy probably had a terminal illness and family members were from out of state and they knew this would be the last time they would all be together so they wanted to make it special. Not his last meal per se, just his last chance to eat a meal with distant relatives. Still odd.
