Modern AI works by training millions of times in simulation. Multiple AI agents run missions, each with slightly different parameters. After the mission, the most successful versions move on to the next round while the least successful are replaced by variations of the successful versions.

It works like "survival of the fittest". The AI agent they finally settle on will be the best at surviving combat. This will include some level of self preservation otherwise it wouldn't be considered a successful candidate in the first place.

But AI has no real "fear". If kamikaze pilots could overcome their own sense of self preservation to complete a mission then AI can do it too. (Unless it's hard-coded to prevent this.)
