Amtrak’s Planning a Big Upgrade for Acela Express

The Points Guy

Since 2000, Amtrak’s Acela Express service has carried millions of passengers between Washington, D.C. and Boston. The current trains have a top speed of 150mph, but they rarely achieve that speed due to limitations with the rails the trains ride on. Thanks to $2.45 billion in government funds, though, the Acela Express service will be getting a huge upgrade come 2021.

The highlight of these upgrades will be the all-new train sets to be manufactured in New York state by French firm Alstom. The new trains will be capable of hitting a maximum speed of 186mph — close to Japan’s Shinkansen trains that travel at a maximum speed of about 200mph. In addition to higher speeds, the new trains will carry one-third more passengers, feature more power outlets and USB ports, have superior Wi-Fi connectivity and will be more efficient.

So are they going to straighten out the track so they can run 186? Or will it stay curves limiting speed below 90?

Live in DC. Here is my brief synopsis of what Amtraks price point should be.

DC-NYC should be no more than $50 round trip. Right now it's $100 if you book well in advance.

DC- Chicago shouldn't be more than $125.

Went to UK to study their train system with Office of Road and Rail and how they regulate it. The US is a failure at transportation in comparison.

I guess they deserve that criticism. The 2015 Philly crash was a northeast regional, and totally avoidable.

That train had no tilting technology, and they use a powerful electric Siemens engine tied to ancient Amfleet cars that date back to the mid 1980s. I've been on those and, while roomy, they are still not very pleasant. They rattle and vibrate when the train hits it's top speed of 110-125 in New Jersey between Philly and New York. They do take that turn in Philly very slowly now though.

Its my understanding that the Acela trains have actually been very safe.

That being said, America's passenger rail outside the northeast sucks and likely will stay that way outside the major coastal urban areas. Our freight network, on the other hand, is among the best in the world.

It better be, since they own the tracks. That is the main reason why Amtrak sucks

Loved riding those trains. When passing one coming the opposite direction there was a sonic boom kind of sound hitting the windows. Had speedometers in the cars also. Always on time, always in view of Mt Fugi.
