American Petroleum Institute RE: Individual Certification Programs

I have 4 API certs, the 510 being one of them. If you have experience doing inspection work, taking a prep class would be wise. If you don't have experience doing the work, you may want to get some true hands on for a couple of years before getting a cert. Many young guys get a cert with no actual experience and are exposed for their lack of knowledge. Once they have been through all the inspection companies, they can't find any work because all the companies know them and have been banished to the do not hire list.

This is what I am trying to avoid. My conundrum is that how do I find work as a inspector in pressure vessels without the actual inspectors cert? I would live to find a company that has one of those rotating career path programs that has you perform a few different roles over a year or two period, but I don't know if those exist in the inspection firm world.

You can go the piping route and get your 570. You can work some projects and/or TA's and shadow some of the 510 guys. The 510 and 570 exams aren't much different from one another. If you can pass one, you can pass the other.
