The application rate for young people seeking technical jobs — like plumbing, building and electrical work — dropped by 49% in 2022 compared to 2020, according to data from online recruiting platform Handshake shared with NPR.
They saw so many white collar jobs got to “work” from home while skilled labor had to go out and work like normal, but now needed pieces of cloth to protect them from the plague.
They decided frick going into work, I’ll sit in front of my computer and work from home.

FWIW my nephew just finished his third year of college. He hates it and is unsure about going back. He is looking at learning a trade.
What state? Also, does he have scholarships or loans taken out?

My point is, and I fully understand this is anecdotal, but for a lot of these unions you're fighting time, hoops, and nepotism.
frick unions that bar entry into the trade beyond basic competency requirements.

Is this a thread where everyone props up the top 5% of tradesmen as an example of why it makes no sense to go to college?
I haven’t seen the first page say you will be making bank years 1 and 2, just that these are tradesmen that are in demand but young people don’t won’t to work it, but will instead go $20k-$100k for a $50k job

Trim carpenters are very difficult to find.

if you're making good money in trades, at least 7/10 times you're working crazy hours and will be missing lots of family and social events (kids games, vacations, weekend trips, etc.), often at the last minute

He probably also has to supply most/all of his own hand tools and the chest.
So less than one semester of tuition at a private or out of state school

And did you tell them about being on disability at 45 from a broken body and no other skills than a trade?
What are you talking about? He’s not telling them to be roofers or brick layer runners or sod layers. He saying learn electrical, plumbing, or carpentry.

Only exceeded by the educated people who are working shite jobs with massive student loan debt shitting on blue collar jobs.

This is no different in the white collar world.

What happens when that most educated generation doesn’t get a good return on that investment of their education, while simultaneously outsourcing and needing to hire skilled trade professionals to perform the most basic repairs and tasks?
They’ll go running to mommy.

People seem to have this impression that making 80-100k as a tradesman is normal or easily achievable. It’s not. For every six figure tradesman there’s probably 20 making half that.
I could say the exact same thing about college graduates.

quote:College has really watered down their requirements and dumbed down their degrees. A lot of degrees in certain fields are just bullshite where the only real jobs after college is actual teaching at colleges. Most don't care and just want to get more people in which equates to more money.
Unless you’re a REALLY strong math and/or science student interested in a STEM career, I would advise against traditional university altogether.

Louisiana. He was on full TOPs. No loans. Really smart, co-valedictorian, 30+ on his ACT, but he never was sold on college. Nearly joined the military but decided to go to college literally about two weeks before school started. He's done alright but hasn't been happy and doesn't feel like he fits in.

Illegals are coming for the welfare, not to work.
This is such bullshite. Go look at the number of "illegals" pre-dawn in a home depot parking lot begging to do shite jobs all day and compare them to the people lined up at your local welfare office.
