Amber alerts: what are they and do they really benefit society?

I believe they better the poor children involved with an amber alert. I'm all for this.

I think they have a good record of working. But that’s probably because the only time they send them out is when it’s a domestic situation that will always end with the child being okay. So in that regard they cook the books.

You never see an amber alert for a straight up candy van abduction.

Define "benefit." If you are in the camp that thinks society should put aside differences and come together to help find a missing child, I would say yes.

They need to be better targeted. If they wake you up in the middle of the night for an amber alert 4 hours away, you go right to your phone settings and turn off the damn things.

The problem with narrowing the search field on the I10 Corridor is that people don't necessarily tend to stay local after abducting a child. If you're not on/just off a major highway, it's a bit silly.


But the cost of waking unhelpful people (read: not in the direct vicinity) up is probably less than the benefit of finding the child safe even with a miniscule chance of actual aid from the message.

Who tf doesn’t know what an amber alert is?

They are these things that instantly communicate a persons description to every AR-15 or other gun carrying American telling them to hunt for a person who kidnapped a kid, it’s a legit deterrent

They often provide car of abductors.
