I do depending on the product. I don't go straight to the one with the most reviews or highest rating, though. You gotta look at the shitty reviews more than the good ones.

exactly

you know what kind of product you're buying, so the good reviews will basically just say "it works how you intend to use it"

the shitty reviews give you insight into why the product is [insert attractive variable, typically price]

Which i feel is common sense. It's the easiest way to avoid getting played.

Some peoples are either too lazy or not bright enough to figure this out.

Hope he doesn't buy some of that Tommy Copper stuff based of the TV reviews.

Those people have to be unbaised.

hell i rarely even give any stock to 5-star reviews. i read 1/2 star reviews mostly

I usually read all the 1s and all the 2s. When a surprising number of these are "Shipment came on 3rd day, not 2nd. I'm a prime member" and "corner of package was torn. Product not damaged, but only giving 2*s" I know that there aren't really big complaints about the product. I use the 3* as a "level-headed person's opinion" when I can find one that actually gives pros and cons. Way too many of the 5* reviews are "I got this today and am so so so so so excited"

Go look up this mediabridge.. It's still at amazon.. And you'll see there are now 500 1 star review from redditors in the last 5 days.

Are those legit?

Eta and they've been up voted to the top as most helpful as well

I hate when the email to rate it comes a day after I get the item. I'm thinking 'how the hell should I know'. Like you said, most five star reviews are "new toy yayayayay!"

I'm not going to use this item for which there was an intentional effort to frick the reviews. It's stupid to even say that's a reasonable example.

You can't have it both ways friend. You just described a system with a major defect in it.

The average shopper is an idiot, see your tea pot purchase, and that's what they are banking in.

That's fine if these same reviews didn't also turn up as 90% of my google results too.

There's a bigger issue at stake here.

OP is an idiot. Amazon uses "verified purchasers" as part of their review system. meaning they bought the item FROM amazon then placed a review

if an item has 5-stars and thousands of reviews but none of them actually bought the product, then obviously there's an issue

also, as many others say, take most reviewers with a grain of salt…if someone takes the time to write 5 paragraphs explaining the ins and outs of the product, it's probably legit

if someone gives it 5-stars and says "this is so awesome!" then rightfully be suspicious.

to recap, amazon is the shiznit

Amazon will take back anything you don't like, at no cost to you. They aren't trying to get anything over on the consumer. It's a byproduct of letting any moron review a product and making amazon easy enough for morons to use.

If you want a nice tea kettle, and you're into giraffes, I'll recommend this one. Even on a gas range, the handle does not get unbearably hot as some reviews have stated. It also shows no burn marks.

As others have said, I judge a product by the bad reviews it has, not the # of good reviews.

Crappy products are going to have a good number of bad reviews, no matter how many more good reviews they have. And even still, that's just one thing that impacts my decision.

You, sir, have the ability to read the good and bad reviews, research the product and make an informed decision. Apparently, not all people have that ability.

Amazon has one of the best shipping and return policies of any big company in the world. They have some of the best prices in the world. I will 100% continue to use them. This isn't any of their fault. Are they supposed to go through and check every single review on every single product?

Everyone knows that reviews can be fudged. If you read a couple, just look for trends of problems. It isn't that hard.

Forums delete bad reviews for their sponsors. Sellers delete bad reviews on their websites. It is well known that it happens. Google, yelp, yahoo, yellow pages, etc all have people who work at companies reviewing themselves. What's so hard to understand about that?

+1 first thing I do is read the 1 or 2 star reviews to see what was the worst possible thing this product attribute has but that same attribute probably doesn't mean anything to a handful of the 5-star reviewers…but reading all the crap reviews I can make a much more educated decision than by just reading the sunshine pumpers
