re: Am I just getting older, or does popular culture really suck as much as it seems?

It's pretty difficult for me to find stuff I like on TV anymore. Maybe some documentaries or true crime shows.
I've come to the realization that movies, music, TV shows of today mostly aren't made to appeal to middle-aged dudes like me.

Old age is undefeated, though the accessibility of older media tends to dilute the new content creation.
It was genuinely hard to listen to our parents or grandparent's music when we were young, outside the oldies station.
Now, the entire history of music is available at a button click on demand, and essentially free.

Pop culture used to have an edginess to it, right or wrong.
Nowadays everything is clean, edited, and boring. People that think they are being edgy are really just doing the same thing everyone else is. Just doing what is trendy on social media. Being "weird" used to come with some hazard, and struggle. It wasn't cool to be weird, but weird people made interesting art that people generally liked.
Now everyone thinks they are wEiRd, and wears it as some kind of badge, which is not that interesting.
People are scared to walk outside the lines because we are basically always being watched and recorded, and there can be some real-life repercussions if you get caught stepping outside those lines. But stepping outside of the lines, and being "dangerous" isn't really all that accepted anymore. "Rock stars" don't really exist anymore.
Look at the movie listings these days, and you'll see that most movies are shitty remakes of classics.
Look at the top 40 charts, and you'll see like 10 different remixes of the same shitty song.
There is still some good, interesting art out there these days, but most of it isn't mainstream.

There's a Southpark episode about this.
And like most topics Southpark takes on it is much more reflective of reality than Twitter or Karine Jean Pierre

Allmand Bros- Doors- Rolling Stones- Cream- Creedence- Zepplin- Dead- Byrds- Floyd- Yardbirds...
it was an awesome time for music...

American culture is played out. It’s collapsing just like the corrupt institutions in this country.

Not really debatable.

You're getting old. Like I told my wife. Kids haven't changed, we have.

Music, and movies in 1995 were objectively more original, more creative, and more interesting than music, and movies in the 2023. There is no doubt about it.
