Other than dry.

Anybody live there or stayed there? Is there anything to do for fun? Good restaurants? Fun places within an hour or two drive?

I've only visited. Very small town but seemed chill and laid back. I ate at some Mexican hole in the wall that was very good. Downtown area looks nice and well kept. Marfa is a short drive away and is interesting if you like artsy stuff. Alpine is probably the closest decent town to Big Bend, which is an amazing place.

That's all I got.

Sul Ross U. is there but it's not really a college town. Despite the hype from movies and artsy types moving around there, that part of the world is still stark and desolate.

Big Bend and Guadalupe mountains aren't that far in "west Texas" terms.

Thank you. Some more questions when you find the time.

What is the "culcha" like? Is there a Mexican Mafia presence or anything like that? Are there any lakes or rivers to swim and fish? Is there any good food besides Mexican? What is the university like? If you don't have land to hunt and frick around on are you screwed living there?

There is in Marfa. I will be steering clear of that.

I hope not in Alpine.

There's a cool hotel there, I forget the name. Go to Big Bend and hike/camp the South Rim. Bring lots of water. Maybe see if the Terlingua Chili Cook Off is going on.

I assume that you'll be traveling along I-10 and were thinking of stopping off?

ETA Nevermind, the hotel that I was thinking of is in Marathon.

An hour to Big Bend isn't bad. 2 and a half to Guadalupe is pretty long.

If Big Bend is the the only thing that mattered in your life, which is completely fair IMO.

If you're into living somewhere very remote then you'll love it. I don't think you'll have many people swinging by for a visit and the nearest airport is over 3hrs away if that's important to you.
