Neg: 18 months in Vietnam. Pos: Three way with 2 clean shaven hippie chicks while on LSD during a 24hr layover in Fairfield, Ca. in 1968.

I was born in 61'.

I think the things that happened in that decade were necessary for the Nation to evolve past segregation and move towards equal rights for all.

I think there had to be a few martyrs for social change to occur.

I think of it as a positive time. That could be nostalgia though.

Music was great, wish i would have appreciated the diversity of ideas, but I was very conservative. Wish i would have gone to Woodstock, but it was thought of an anti-war rally, (it wasnt- it was about kids having a great time), and I was pro-war. Wasn't unusual for women to go bra-less. Big cars was in- had a SS454, 450 hp. A lot of fun was had by all, except the poor guys that had to go to Vietnam, I was a year too young.

To answer the OP, of course it was a positive for society. Anyone who doesn't recognize this is trolling, doesn't know WTF they're talking about, or is a hopeless reactionary.

Many millienals hate baby boomers because they ruined the economy and won't retire. This is why you see the recent jaded take on the decade many baby boomer hold dear. For years all millienas heard was how lazy they are so now they flip it and blame everything on baby boomers.

Positive. The civil rights movement needed to happen. It's ridiculous that it took so long to happen. End of morality? Sinning been's going on a long, long time, my friend. From the days of Roman orgies, etc.

It's not just the Ys, the Xers are pissed with the Boomers as well. As more of the boomers start to die off and lose influence and the new generations take over, you will see more of this. You are starting to see more backlash against the "greatest gen" for creating the boomers as well.

The scope of the discussion in this sixties question is like a college course and you want to discuss all that here?

Why don't we just discuss the wit and wisdom of Maynard G. Krebs?

Maybe that's because most Boomers are not yet retirement age. I would image only those born from '46-'49 are retirement age. Those born from '50-'64 have a bit longer in the work force.

Born in 1949. I'm a Boomer. High school years 1963-67. Loved the music not the drugs. A lot of loosening up of the fabric of society - some good/some not. Genesis of the Obama circle in this era. The beginning of a gradual loss of the meaning of excellence in education. Loss of direction and consensus among Americans; the extremes of partisanship in govt. began to become noticeable. Widespread air conditioning good. Throwaway consumerism starts. Boomers fall in love with our fractured generation. Medical/technological advances great. Net value of 1960s: Mixed bag.

All things considered:

No.

I was born in the sixties, as we're most of my friends, so I change my answer after reading AU:

Only me and my kind are the positives. Otherwise, nah.

People in their early 60s are defiantly at or near retirement age.

God started leaving America back in the early 1900s with advances in science. The 60s were just a catalyst.

I think it's fairly obvious with the luxury of hindsight that the '60s counterculture movement was the most destructive single non-military event in the history of western civilization.

Personally, I think it was some kind of commie mind-control propaganda event to try and destroy the West from within. Jury is still out on whether or not it worked.

the 60s were absolutely a positive for society; even with all the retardedness that came with them, a lot of forward-thinking that was so sorely needed after the MUCH WORSE 50s also took place.

The thing about societal evolution I would emphasize is this: if you're going to get better and push forward, you have to be given the opportunity and the freedom to frick up. You'll do some really stupid things along the way, but you'll also do some great ones.

The hope is that the good stuff sticks and the stupid stuff is soon recognized for what it is, and falls away harmlessly.

The 60s were a regrettably necessary time period in American history, and I firmly believe that American society is better for it having happened the way it did.

ETA: The time period looks awful to younger people today, and I agree with this assessment. It was a divisive, turbulent time and, I am quite sure, NO fun to go through for many people no matter where your head was at. Think of it as a "trial by fire" period for America, which IMO we passed on through.
