I don't normally gush over natural phenomenon, but this experience was totally worth the drive.

Yeah... managed to get a few decent pics, but they don't describe the experience.

Location: Spring City TN, totality duration 2 mins 30 secs.

As totality approached this is what happened...

About 5 mins before totality 2 C-130's buzzed the valley.
2 mins before, about 20 buzzards flew directly overhead heading to who knows where.

During totality the temperature dipped noticeably.
The light was surreal. Stars visible.

After totality I was on a high... hard to describe.
The experience sank in about what I had just seen.

People who were within a few hour drive of totality but didn't make a drive totally missed out on an unbelievable experience.

Awe inspiring, spiritual

Totally agree. I traveled 4 hrs each way by vehicle yesterday to be at the line of totality. I totally intend on making a vacation/event out of the 2024 one. A total eclipse is worth it.

Same, glad I was in the path of this one. Totally wrote it off, didn't believe the hype. Was shocked how awesome it was in totality.

Agreed.

This kind of shite interests some people and they love to experience these type of natural phenomena. Others, not so much. Whatever floats your boat. I drove 13 hours to go to some great breweries, pick up a Kamado Joe my father-in-law gave me, and see the eclipse. Long drive, yes, incredible experience that was worth it, absolutely.

Unfortunately any phone or camera set to "auto" will try to adjust the exposure to make it brighter and totally destroys the impact. And the full experience really requires a full VR treatment, it's more than just the eclipse itself but also what everything else around you looks like.

The closest thing I can think of is that one moment it's a little dimmer than usual but nothing special, then suddenly WHAM the Eye of Sauron is looking over a dimly lit land of shadow. It's like being in a weird sort of reversed twilight where the horizon is fully lit (it isn't in the full path), but you are in shadow with that eye looking at you. Two and a half minutes later, the other side of that eye suddenly gets brighter and then it's back to a perfectly normal and unspectacular 98% eclipse.

Keep in mind that due to the sizes of the Moon and Sun plus the geometry involved, this is probably an extremely rare thing in the entire galaxy.

Looking forward to 2024 and likely 2020 in Chile as well.

Edit: I looked for the light and dark bands alternately rippling across the ground just before the end, they were definitely there.
