Yeah that would be a nightmare. Especially if the frats all tried to build houses in the same area.

Imagine if in 10 years when the Cottages is torn down if they build a bunch of frat houses along Ben Hur

All the major sororities have black and Asian members. Not a lot but growing.

The major fraternities don't yet, but most of the smaller ones do.

It's happening naturally and not being forced, which is the right path.

This would be great if the year was still 1969.

Shots are crazy though

They are. And it's stupid. We made you gun beer on our bid night. You can only hold so much in your stomach and would just start throwing up beer. Hell, after a few time, you would just throw up beer back in your cup and drink it. But never shots. Even back in the 90s that shite was too taboo for us on the old row.

quote:

I recall an LSU student dying in 1991-92 from vodka shots at a drinking game/contest.

It was 1996, if I remember correctly. I was working at Murphy's that night; and SAE had their bid night. They were forcing 3 wise men down the throats of the pledges. I also remember that Ben Wynne had taken drugs or had drugs in his system. I also think he went back to the SAE house, where he later died. So, he was off campus and everything happened off campus. And a private business was sued over it and later closed.

I had asked Mark for my fraternity to have their bid night there but he told me they had already booked SAE. I often wonder if Murphy's would still be there had we beat them to it.

quote:

Unfortunately it takes years of adulthood to realize this. Also, being underage and illegal doesn't help. shots and shot games are practical for 18-20 year olds who have to get their drinking done quickly in case they get caught.

I agree with this. Back then, the drinking age had just gone up from 18 to 21. LSU had officially become a dry campus, and they banned South Seas for all fraternities except one that invented it, FIJI. But everyone still drank and hazed....but I think putting so many restrictions on when and where people can drink does force a binge drinking nature to it.

I'm glad I just made the pledges pick the seeds out of my weed and didn't go into a room for a few hours to smoke them! I just wasn't very into all of that anyway.

Nothing like having your life ruined for hazing...that would be hard to live down.

Bennett was already planning his exit strategy. I'm sure he didnt want it to end that way, but he had opened a restaurant and wanted to transition out of the bar business. The Wynn deal killed both the bar and restaurant, and he left town. His wife's family owns a dude ranch in New Mexico, and he runs it now.

Yep. He had New Mexico on his mind. Did you work for him, as well?

A lot of people don't realize that Bennett was a serious computer programming dude.

He wrote all of the systems for Murphy's, the Grill and Fred's. Really smart guy; but no way that place wouldn't still be there had that not happened.

Two blocks off campus, a cash cow, and at one point there wasn't a place in America that bought more Budweiser. Mark would have just bought him out probably.

I'm surprised Fred's is still around. That has to be some kind of record for college bar longevity.

Millions, man. I never called my parents for a dime. Always paid my dues and tuition on a few gamedays.

20 year old kid walking out of work at 3:30 am on a Sunday morning during the fall with $1,300 cash in my pocket.

Fred's is probably the same. Think about it, what does Mark have going out every week besides cheap booze and kegs of beer?

Millions....

I'm asking a serious question - what is the effect of this punishment?

The effect is that all greek organizations can no longer hold meetings or any other type of event. This may not seem like it's that big of a deal to some, but many fraternities and sororities have to put deposits down on venues and artists for events, among other things. This means that should the suspension last past these events, those greek organizations have now lost all that money, which in some cases could be thousands.

If the headline read: "F. King suspends all LSU athletics following the death of a freshman football player." People's tones would be a lot more sympathetic, I guarantee it...

Hell, they even shut down Greek intramural sports. No flag football or anything.

Remember when the kid OD'd on heroin supplied by an employee of that gaming joint venture on campus? Did LSU shut that place down?
