I’m sorry for your loss.
My old friend is about 14 years old. He was perfectly healthy until this past year when he went deaf and got arthritis in his back legs. Medicine helps his legs but I know that he maybe has another year or two before a very hard decision will have to be made.
He was abandoned on my property as a tiny pup, and we took him in. Brown lab mix who has become a very frosty faced friend.

Very sorry for your loss. Sounds like Layla picked herself a good family.

but that’s a link to Shovels & Rope’s song “Love Song From a Dog”.
You’re going to have me crying on a Saturday night. “Running like a color blind love sick fool”, “Running like I’ll die if I don’t get to you”, “Running like your love is gonna save my life”.

Gents, seriously, who downvoted these condolences? A man's best friend has passed and he's hurting, don't be a dick. Less is more sometimes.

What a beautiful animal.

Damnit, I swear I promise myself not to read these types of threads, and I do only because I'm a dog lover and have two labs that are over 10 with one fixing to turn 14 with glaucoma and hard of hearing. He hates and whines when I leave him at home. I'm 67 and have to lift him in and out of the truck cause he can't jump up anymore. But he still loves chasing ducks and getting his cheese every morning when we get up. RIP Layla, dogs give way more than they receive IMO, they just don't see what happens when they leave us.

the day I have to say goodbye to them for the last time.
I can tell you first hand that it absolutely sucks. I’ve had to do it twice. I was laying on the floor with my Australian Shepherd when he took his last breath.

Reminds me of when my wife wanted a dog in 2017. I still have the text exchange:
W: I’m coming home with a dog
Me: No! No no no!
W: Yes, this is happening.
Me: if you come home with that dog I’m buying a truck. I swear to god, I’m going buy a new truck on Monday.
I now love the dog, and I love my truck.

Been there multiple times and agree it is just awful, hurts all the way down to your stomach. In our society, as men we have to push our emotions down and be strong for everyone else (just the way things work, right), but that doesn't mean we don't feel it, and the loss of a dog is as bad a day as they come. Very sorry for your loss and RIP Layla.
I agree with the sentiment of ur post , but i have to make a correction : No, we dont have to push our emotions down and ‘be strong’.. that’s some bullshite.. i mean, sure , for temporary periods at work or something, or at meetings… but not at home or most times; that’s how guys wind up blowing up and taking out their entire family, or blowing their own brains out.. it’s ok to show emotion, it’s healthy, and necessary.. the sooner that old school way of thinking dies out, the better .. RIP Layla

That’s actually an awesome strategy, note to self .
