I think there is a massive difference in being proud of your son and wife and using family values as a cudgel to shame single mothers, homosexual parents, etc. Beyond all that, my feeling that Merrill is a POS is primarily based on the fact that he cheated on his wife. Other than certain illegal acts, I think cheating on your spouse is the shittiest thing you can do to the person you claim to love. I’ve ended friendships over it. That he also used “family values” as a campaign platform is also shitty. Imagine what his wife is feeling this morning. Imagine your spouse is publicly outed in that fashion and how you’d feel.

I hate it for his family and for Alabama. He's been a great Secretary of State. I didn't want him to win the Senate seat, but was hoping he'd stick around as SoS for a while longer.
It seems this chick only did this because he tried to end the affair, which makes her far worse in this scenario than him in my eyes.

Running on a "family values" platform has nothing to do with this. People make mistakes. People who make mistakes can also support family values. The two things aren't mutually exclusive, and are only treated as such by dishonest people who want to push a narrative. People making mistakes isn't proof that family values and Christian values aren't the right way to go.

Of course it is, and if you listen to the audio she released or read the transcripts of it you'll see that he recognized it was a mistake and was trying to end it. If he had kept the affair going, she probably never goes public.

I think he's playing this right by removing himself from contention for any races next year. If he sits out for a rotation or two and doesn't have any more scandals like this come out, people will move on from this and he could be a contender again.
ETA: Or maybe he won't put his name back out there, but he'll be fine either way. I'm less certain that she will be fine, though. Her 15 minutes of fame will be gone in weeks.

Problem is running on moral issues such as family values is highly subjective and leads to suppression of individual rights. A person who is gay has a different definition of family. It isn't the government's responsibility to define the term. And as the other poster stated, what he did was not a mistake.
