Looks like China just escorted them out of their airspace, but does the media really have to report it as "spy plane"?

Well, it kinda is a "spy plane".

The Boeing RC-135 is a family of large reconnaissance aircraft built by Boeing and modified by a number of companies, including General Dynamics, Lockheed, LTV, E-Systems, and L-3 Communications, and used by the United States Air Force and Royal Air Force to support theater and national level intelligence consumers with near real-time on-scene collection, analysis and dissemination capabilities. Based on the C-135 Stratolifter airframe, various types of RC-135s have been in service since 1961. Unlike the C-135 and KC-135 which are recognized by Boeing as the Model 717,[3] the RC-135 is internally designated as the Model 739 by the company. Many variants have been modified numerous times, resulting in a large variety of designations, configurations, and program names.

If they are captured you really think it helps our boys trying to deny they are spying if our own media outlets are calling them spies?

Given that the 'R' in RC-135 stands for reconnaissance, I don't think it really matters what the media say.

Didn't one of these get captured by the Chinese in the late 90's? I believe they held a crew of about 25 airmen for a while.

There's no denying it's a spy plane. It is just that. To try and claim it's anything other than a spy plane is useless because everyone knows the RC-135 is in fact a spy plane. Intelligence gathering (spying) is it's only mission. It would be like a pilot flying a F-22 entering into another country's airspace and then trying to claim he's flying a crop duster.

Sure doesn't help, but the media saying spy doesn't either
Whatever, I'm sure you guys wouldn't care if you're trying to convince someone you're not a spy and your own country is too busy creating juicy headlines to care they are throwing you under the bus.

Trust me, the media saying the RC-135 is a spy plane is not news to the Chinese or anyone else for that matter. In fact, if the government or American media tried to claim it was anything other than a spy plane all that would do is make us look stupid.

Let's say the media did not describe the RC-135 as a spy plane. Pray tell how do you think we'd go about trying to "convince" the Chinese this was not a spy plane?

Talk around it somehow rather than openly admitting you were on a sply plane spying and now you're in Chinese jail

You realize that (in theory at least) there is a difference between the government and the media, right?

It's all key words. You don't say "spy"... you say "surveillance/reconnaissance". That's basic level-entry shite.

They were in international airspace that China claims as its own, but the rest of the world recognizes as international. China is basically claiming the whole East China and South China seas, which is a potential flashpoint in the maybe-not-so-distant-future.
"Spy plane" implies covertness. This is an electronic reconnaissance aircraft. They fly in international airspace in plane sight, and intercept freely available radio signals.
The Navy version of one of these planes was involved in an similar intercept several years ago. One of the Chinese planes collided with it, causing an emergency landing on Chinese territory. It was a huge international incident for a while, but 9/11 happened a few months later and everybody forgot about it.

I agree with you are saying but the C stands for Cargo. I could see our government playing it off as a cargo flight.

"in international air space"

You and I understand that, but China doesn't give a shite

Talk around it somehow? Come on. Let's say this boat wandered into Chinese territorial waters....
Do you think we'd be able to convince the Chinese this was just a shrimp boat that got lost?
I ask that because trying to tell the Chinese a RC-135 is not a spy plane is just as absurd.

The plane in question was in international airspace.
