Despite the argument over whether this is a "spy plane" or not, this is becoming a routine thing for the US and China and will continue like this. Cold War 2.0 is about to kick off thanks to weak isolationist and "Russia is a friend" policies brought on by Bush and Obama.

We've emboldened both China and Russia while cutting our operational capabilities in half. The simple fact is that China doesn't own the South China Sea and shouldn't be able to claim it as territorial waters. No one knows for sure what kind of resources are in that region of the sea, but China seems willing to risk conflict and confrontation to get their wishes.

There will be proxy wars in the near future just like there were in the mid 20th century and it'll be over preventable shite like this.

I was involved in several ISR ops myself... never once considered it "spying".

Talk around it somehow? Come on. Let's say this boat wandered into Chinese territorial waters....

Well to be completely fair you could pull a HUGE government issued trawl net behind that thing... Don't know if the chinamen would fall for it though

That doesn't change the fact that it was spying though.

Me either. I was in the "Force Protection" business. The bad guys might have categorized it differently, though.

So was I while also in the submarine force in the exact same location as this RC-135.
