Don't worry, some mouth-breathing politician with no clue and a defense contractor in his District, will be along shortly to shove some ultra expensive gee whiz bomber down our throats any time now. Never mind that it won't work, can't do the mission and that no one wants it.

See the A-10 fight as a reference.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but didn't want to start a new thread. The article linked below does a decent job at showing why we will continue to need the B-52 and a really good job at highlighting some upgrades we need to keep it combat viable for that duration of time.

They are impressive, eventhough ALL of North Bossier is in Barksdale's flight path. Word is Northrup Grumman is working on the next generation bomber that should be flying early next decade.

The B-52 is just one of those things that was simply "done right" much like the Colt 1911, the Remington 870, International Farmall 806, John Deere 4020, 1960s Ford Bronco, '57 Chevy Belair, etc. They're just like a broke dick...you can't beat em.

Northrop Grumman was awarded the contract to develop the Long Range Strike Bomber (LRS-B), but that has been protested by the Lockheed-Boeing team. That protest will be adjudicated and an eventual contract will either be re-awarded to Northrop Grumman or if the Lockheed-Boeing protest is successful, they will all have to re-compete for the contract.

Unclassified Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for the LRS-B is "mid-2020s."

ETA: The LRS-B may or may not replace the B-52. The AF is developing a Bomber Roadmap that will get approved at the highest levels which will stipulate which "Legacy" bombers are retired and the associated timelines for those actions.
