I think that Alexandria actually has about 10,000 feet on one of their runways...not sure of the width, though.
that va tech flyover was cool as hell, man!...is there a particular altitude for flyovers or is it a function of the aircraft and crew?...

Very cool flyby. I love the smoke coming off of those P&Ws
Did yall fly from BAD for that?

Air Force regulations say we are supposed to be at 1,000 feet above ground level and maximum speed of 300 Knots in a "clean configuration" (gear and flaps up, bomb doors closed).

makes sense...you don't really want to risk bursting 102,000 sets of eardrums in a single pass!...

No. We were actually flying out of Dover AFB in New Jersey. My crew and I were set to receive an award at the Air Force Association Technology Conference in DC on the following Monday so we had taken a BUFF that way as our air transportation for that. To "justify" the taxpayer expense, they had us do some flyby's on the Saturday. On one sortie we did the Va Tech game, an airshow flyby at Danville, Kentucky, and a Sep 11th memorial flyby at Ft Scott, Kansas before returning to Dover.

Do you know which squadron he is in? There are several flying squadrons at Barksdale.

I guess this one. Not really sure though. I know he's a reservist but has been on active duty since he transfered to the Air Force from the Marines. He was a Cobra pilot in the Corps

Interesting. BTR runways are only 150 feet wide. So even if they had the length they don't have the width.

B52 landed for the first time at this years Oshkosh AirVenture, runway is 8002' x 150' they took up the landing lights on the edges of the runway to avoid interference with the wingtip gear.

Yes. I remember that now. Someone posted that here on the OT. Probably was you.

Yes, I know about this one. Was done by our Reserves and a lot of people adamantly disagreed with them doing this. Very risky proposition. I'm glad they didn't, but several things could have gone wrong that would have turned this into a catastrophic event when on a normal runway those kinds of things would have been no big deal. For example: an engine loss on takeoff or an aborted takeoff and the drag chute doesn't deploy. Both would have been very bad.

Didn't realize there was such a strong supporter for LSU at Barksdale. I would have loved to work with you to make a flyover happen. I just left the 96th last January.

There's several of us here at KBAD. How long were you in the 96th? I've been out of the ops squadrons since leaving the 2 OSS in Jan 09. Was in the 49 TES, 53 TMG Det 1, and 340 WPS until moving over to AFGSC staff last August.

I was there for almost 4 years.

I was at Oshkosh 2011 when a ANG F16 ran off the end of the same runway, I was walking the fenceline right where it trenched in the dirt. Lot of people ran up to get a closer look, I hauled butt in the opposite direction in anticipation of a fire and explosion, but it all ended well with no one hurt.

No engine upgrade, no care.

I used to hear that they were older than the guys flying them back when guys my age were flying it.
We are probably about 10 years away from somebody flying a plane older than his grand dad.
I know it is a modern plane in an old body but that is still kind of cool. If anybody on the design team is still alive somebody ought to do an interview with them.

We're trying. Need some of you OT Ballers to chip in on the up to $8 billion bill to do it. Or convince Congress to give the AF the money. Right now we're trying to build the case that even if you pay that amount of money up front, you'd still save money in the long term through decreased fuel and engine overhaul costs.
However, if we do upgrade the engines it will still be an 8 engine aircraft and not 4. Switching to a 4 engine configuration would be almost twice as expensive and not really gain anything. Having 8 also allows for way more redundancy. Go ask any other aircraft if they can shut down two engines inflight and still continue the mission.
