But he basically embodied everything opposite of a typical serial killer

Why did he take his breaks between killings like he did? The Wiki never really went into this on BTK.

Hard to raise kids, stalk high-value targets, and murder at the same time.

BTK specifically quit after his daughter was born - some weird remorse I assume?

Bundy is the most overrated. Dude was begging to get caught and just fell into incompetence left and right

I think it was more that he just couldn't control himself any longer.

IMO Son of Sam is the most overrated. Dude didn't kill nearly as many people as his fame would lead you to believe.

Underrated/not talked about enough might be LISK.

Nah man. He gave out his actual name while committing crimes

Drove the same car that was super rare to do those crimes in. And kept evidence in that car all the time.

His GF told police about him like 3 times and they never checked into him

He legit walked out the door/window twice on podunk police after they figured out it was him

Guy wouldn’t have made it past one murder with any form of police competence.

In the 70's, being a semi-attractive, white male helped you get away with a lot. seee Dahmer for further reference. Hell, in that case, the cops let his NUDE victim back into his custody

Which is my point. People drool over him like he’s some criminal mastermind. He’s really not that interesting besides all the dumbassery that went on to allow it to happen.

Holding an entire city, and the largest in this country, in abject terror for a couple years will gain you some notoriety, fame, and mystique. Throw in his bit about talking dogs and Satan worship, and it all makes sense.

Baton Rouge was held under an aura of panic and terror during all the Derrick Todd Lee killings.

There's a documentary on Amazon Prime I believe if you're into that type of stuff! It's called "The Killing Season"

New York media made people go nuts over this.

Bundy was prolific, but should've been caught very early before he had any notable numbers. I'm talking after his first 1 or 2 victims, any competent police force would've gotten him.

Then he escaped in Colorado from court house and then only after that committed his most famous sorority murders in Florida.

Read up on Ed Gein and Albert Fish.

You know people say this, and then you realize there are lab techs basically bribed to fabricate lab results...

quote:

A mass dismissal of wrongful convictions - perhaps the biggest ever - unfolded in a Boston courthouse on Tuesday, as prosecutors in seven Massachusetts counties dropped more than 21,000 low-level drug cases tainted by the work of a rogue lab chemist.
The number of corrupted convictions was so unwieldy that the district attorneys used compact discs to deliver lists of cases they were dropping and those they believed they could successfully re-prosecute.

LINK

If nothing else, it is now much easier to point the finger at an innocent person and have them go behind bars if you have the right person under your thumb.

Those are different scenarios. These guys are getting caught from crowd sourcing DNA from ancestry type websites.

The DNA lab folks aren't throwing a dart at a list of a million random people and telling the cops that random person is a prolific serial killer

Conventional wisdom was that a SK couldn't stop. He would continue until he was caught or killed. Raeder proved that this wasn't necessarily true.

Just think, if Patton Oswald hadn’t killed his wife, she could be enjoying the fruits of effort in catching this guy.
