They changed it in 1995. The state supreme court struck it down in March 1996. Then Dick Ieyoub decided he could just enforce the law anyway. The Court ended up reversing itself.

Public school in the 70's.
We had to wear shirts with a collar. No shorts. Hair couldn't be over our collars or our ears. Guys with fros had limits and were measured with rulers. No metal picks or rakes(cake cutters). No knives. Everyone with a pickup had shotguns & rifles in their gun rack. Lots of axe handles in vehicles too. Never saw anyone's car get searched.
Things we got whipped for:
-Not doing homework.
-Cutting up in class.
-Growing chin hairs by not shaving for a couple of weeks(got the whipping after shaving with no shaving cream in the principle's bathroom).
-Fighting(We got whipped, but not suspended, and no one called the cops).
-Athletes had tougher rules if the coach wanted them, and whippings were given if grades weren't up to par.
-Just about anything that would result in a kid getting kicked out of school now would have resulted in a paddling back then.

Excuse me if I don't buy this conference of players that seems very unlikely would be involved in the matter.
Even if the officer thought the policy was ridiculous, I highly doubt they sided with a student and argued it was perfectly fine they have a muzzleloader in their truck in front of the principle and school administrator.
