AC guys... is single compressor dual evap possible?

The new rage in high end fridges. A high pressure diverter let's the unit have two separate cooling zones with one compressor.
So. I wonder if this is something, that would make duct work more efficient.
Without two compressors, you have one, with the evaporators each getting pressure as needed.
The system isn't really that complicated and it's fairly common.
Seems like with less ducting and two evaporators you could have two zone cooling for almost half the price of a two unit system.
There evaps are simple, but you have two handlers, two thermostats, would be nothing to add electric or gas heat and just one compressor.
Would need more coolant, but because of the diverter the compressor really isn't working harder.
An electric control connected to both thermostats and both handlers would tell the valve which evap needs pressure.

Can the compressor operate both zones at the same time?
Seems like you'd need one of those variable speed compressors to be able to ramp up or down depending on which zones was calling for.

I'm not an AC guy by any stretch, but I presume it's possible from a design point of view. I'm not sure there would be much of a benefit though. Having a 6 ton unit with two handlers doesn't seem especially less expensive than two 3 ton units. Google is showing 3 ton compressors at ~1500 vs. ~3500 for a 6 ton, and the $500 difference is before adding in any extra complexity of the system.

Id rather have 2 separate units
That way if one system goes down you still have cold rooms in your house

This is common with minisplit systems. One variable speed compressor runs multiple indoor units.

yeah, you would need one of the three phase variable compressors, because the three phase can have an inverter that changes frequency to have it operate at different speeds.

Cool beans. Needed to run two rooms in a detached garage but didn't want ducting.

Yeah you're essentially describing a mini split system.
I've installed one before at an old house in NOLA converted to a bed and breakfast.
2 compressors outside, refrigerant and power lines run from the compressors along the exterior walls of the building, each room in the building has its own indoor unit mounted on an interior wall that's controllable via a remote control. Each guest can thus control their own rooms independently. No ductwork required.

This is called a VRF system.
One outdoor compressor. And u can have a cassette in each room if u wanted so no duct is an option, just more refrigerant piping. Or you can have multiple air handling units off one condensing unit and still have duct but now can have multiple zones with it's on t-stat
