Ignore the recteq fanboys. They are decent grills, but they are chinese/american hybrids like most of the others in this price point. The sear box/sidekick that you can get with the camp chef is a game changer, and the sole reason I went with camp chef over recteq, gmg, traeger etc. No ragrets.
If you're going to step up to yoder/pitts n spitts etc for a 100% USA unit then that's a different ballgame.

The Yoder has a panel you can remove to cook directly over the fire, get's in the 600 degree range.
Camp Chef has this as well. Still, I prefer to sear on the Camp chef searbox at 900F.

I second the Yoder and its ability to hit 700 degrees.

Masterbilt Gravity Feed I believes goes up to about 700.

Have a woodwind 36 with sidekick. I would buy it again tomorrow with no hesitation. I love having the sidekick to reverse sear. There's nothing else on the market that can compete with that all in one. I posted a video of one of my sidekick sears below.

What’s wrong with traeger? I asked for one for Christmas. I have a friend that has one and loves it so not sure why it’s getting some hate in this thread

They outsourced to China. I don’t hate it, but it’s not awesome.
Mine doesn’t hold temp well.
To be fair, I’m a cheap arse and bought the tailgater, so it’s made with thinner metal which likely doesn’t retain heat. You will likely be fine and cook great food on it.
If I had it to do again, and I was spending the money, RecTec or Yoder

Nothing, I have one and it works great, but most pellet smokers have a limitation of 450-500 degrees. You can get better for higher price in RecTec, Yoder, etc., or comparable for less.
Two things I will get with my next pellet smoker next year is bigger, I got the Traeger Pro 22, and several times I needed bigger. Second thing is one that goes beyond 500 degrees. I am eyeing the Yoder as my next pellet smoker. I will keep my Pro 22 for when I have a need to cook for more people and need a second one or for just my family.

Do any of you cook steaks entirely with these pellet grills...can you crank them hot enough to sear or do you need attachments/have to go cast iron or other route to sear?
Get some grill grates and you can sear anything without flare ups. I have a set for my Traeger and GMG pellet smokers plus a set for my Weber Silver.

Ok I’m getting the ironwood series

If you're going to the Ironwood series I would just compare the RecTec and make a choice, but the Ironwood is a good smoker. The Rectec is just a better build with a better warranty. RT-700 is a heck of a unit for similar pricing to the Ironwood. Just because it's stainless steel construction and the warranty. IW-650 is similar priced and I wouldn't go any smaller than these two models unless you absolutely smoke for only small groups. I believe the RT-700 has a 40lb Pellet box if I remember correctly and 650 holds 20lb.
Also, on full setting I think you can achieve 600 degrees with RT which is a great searing temp.
Just looked and adding that the RecTec is a 6 year warranty and the Ironwood is a 3 Year warranty. I can't compare customer service, but Traeger was easy to deal with when I have had to. Others here have said RT is really good customer service.

The ash tray cleaning system is clutch. Sear station is severely under-rated.
I went with a pitboss for my first pellet grill just because they are dirt cheap (and 4 year warranty on all parts) and have a lot of grilling surface, and I wasn't going to jump right to a $2k Yoder without learning about pellet cooking. Very happy with it. Has a sear slide feature to go from indirect to direct over the fire pit. Made many reversed seared tri tips/rib eyes/roasts/etc. Very under-rated feature. Never had a bad long smoke either.
From my understanding, Tragear was first to the game, but use Chinese parts/components, yet charge a slight premium for what you get.
That being said, my next grill will be a Mak or Yoder.

RecTeq is not in the same league. It's chinese just like Traeger.

You mean between the Yoder and RecTec? I won't disagree.
