I distinctly remember an episode where a uoung actor degrades a Mexican. This ol baw, 75+ years old, goes off on him.

You can say what you want about the South, but family guy got a few things right when they showed the South. We may not always get along, but you better not insult one of us as an outsider. Black or white, we are neighbors, you are the outsider.

so they tested the cashier 2x with the same person

They aren't testing the cashier, she's in on it. They're testing the other customers.

You must be from Alabama.

Not paying attention to the curriculum of 2nd grade isn't a disability. It's just a bad decision.

I think the show has been surprised by what they find in the south. They have deliberately tried to set the stage for racism and have found the opposite.

That has kinda been the point of the show since inception. While the primarily recreate ripped from the headlines and stereotype situations the vast majority of the time people whether they are in the deep South, LA or NYC do the right thing. By and large, it is a feel-good show that that goes a long way to show most people are basically good and dispelling stereotypes.

Had a guy in our office last week who couldn't read. Seemed like he had normal intelligence, I don't know what his story was. He had a friend he trusted read the contract to him.

Education has been compulsory for a long time. Maybe if we're talking about our Papaw who dropped out of kindergarten during the Depression to work on the farm. But in 2019 that's a ridiculously rare situation. Was the person held prisoner?

There's still plenty of reasons people can be illiterate. Severe dyslexia that caused so many problems they essentially give up; and by they I mean the teachers and family. Some other form of learning disability. Yeah it's not super common anymore but it happens.
