Awesome point... But you have to realize WHEN that tragic event happened...Micheal Jackson was A MEGA superstar... But there was not even close to the reaction they had When Lenon was shot........

No, but if I'm there and I randomly hit some numbers and it connects, wouldn't that be cool!
Maybe

Lennon’s death wasn’t nearly as big as Elvis’ death. It was shocking because he was shot, but not nearly as big IMO, and I remember the fallout from both. To be honest, I think Randy Rhoads was and to some degree still is lamented more than Lennon, or at least it is in my generation, as is Bonham and SRV.
I think Paul McCartney passing would have been a tougher one though. He was clearly the gears in the band, as well as what he did with Wings. Giant....

I would imagine nothing tops JFK.

If it's meant to be then it's meant to be.

How could that SOB get so many bullets into John without taking out Yoko?

Not sure if it has been said but Dolly Parton and/or Betty White. The difference is their deaths won’t be as shocking because of their age.

Not necessarily the public, but for just me:
Robin Williams
Chester Benington
Alex Trebek

From a worldwide perspective it would be the Queen or a soccer star like Messi or Ronaldo.

Elvis' death might have been "bigger", but the "not nearly" you insist on is not accurate.

99% of people have never heard of him.

What if John Lennon's death didn't touch us or resonate with us?
People born under 60 may not understand just how humongous the Beatles were culturally. They were like Zep plus LeBron plus the Kardashians or whoever sets the fashion trends today. There was no aspect of popular culture they didn't influence.
Lennon's death was a "perfect storm" for cultural impact. He was a Beatle, he was relatively young, he died violently/unexpectedly, and there another thing that I'm old enough to remember -- the demand throughout the '70s of a Beatles reunion. His death ended that dream, a metaphor for Utopianism.
Reactions to Michael Jackson's death probably surpassed Lennon's worldwide, due to his popularity in the third world. I don't know if anyone could match that today. Certainly not an athlete -- many people know nothing about Kobe aside from his first name.

Reagan was put in the ground impressively.
Willie will be a big deal for a lot of people, he’s the last man standing. But a big portion of the public won’t care.
So many more people are in the public eye now than 40 years ago, I’m not sure any one person will make a country wide impact anymore.
