This happened near Payson, AZ. About 2 hours northeast of PHX.

At least nine people are dead and one person missing after a flash flood hit an Arizona swimming hole on Saturday afternoon, CBS affiliate KPHO-TV in Phoenix reports.
The Gila County Sheriff's Office said nine bodies were recovered throughout the day Sunday and that a 27-year-old man is still missing.
Agencies have suspended the search until early Monday morning.
The flash-flooding hit Saturday afternoon at Cold Springs canyon, about 100 northeast of Phoenix, and some people were washed several miles downstream.
Four people were rescued by helicopter crews Saturday and were treated at a nearby hospital for hypothermia.
"It's pretty much recovery [now]. We don't believe there's anybody left out there," Water Wheel Fire and Medical District Fire Chief Ron Sattelmaier said. "They had no warning. They heard a roar, and it was on top of them."

It's a popular place to hike to, I've never been, but friends of mine were just here a few weeks ago.

Looks like these people had no warning about this. It wasn't even raining where they were at.

You live out there, so I don't have to tell you how dangerous and surprising flash floods can be in your neck of the woods.

It's that time of year. AZ has some of the best lightning storms you'll ever see.

Yeah with monsoon season in full effect around here....I wouldn't be going hiking near creeks like that in the first place. They even said in the article that they wish they had a way to block people from going to those areas during monsoon season.

The people dead I think are from one family. There was a family of 14 there that got swept away by the flood.

I knew the kind of potential the PHX area had for flooding when I saw that their soccer fields and playground fields were actually flood relief zones. Not to mention the massive canals built throughout the city.

I was caught in the storm Saturday afternoon at Lake Pleasant (just north of Phoenix), saw 2 boats completely sink, at least 8 damaged badly against the rocks. Weather was great and then in less than 10 minutes 45-55 mph wind, hail and rain along with 4-6 foot waves. Absolutely crazy. The dry dock broke from its cables and washed about 50 feet away as well.
Then had low visibility on trip home due to a dust storm....Mother nature was pissed.

We had an inch and a half of rain in 20 minutes yesterday in Chalmette. It rained, it ended. Water piled up in the street and then drained away.

We take for granted how well our area handles rain.

The problem is the elevation change and the underlying rock base dont make for good absorption into dry ground. Thats a crazy video
