TL;DR - MIL has a new 7-month old Lab with major hip dysplasia that was not disclosed by the breeder, and will require two hip replacements.

My BIL picked up a 7 month old Lab for my MIL that we all pitched in for a Christmas gift. He had originally met the breeder for a 6 week old black, but when he got there he asked him about the 7 month old chocolate he saw at his place (in hindsight, this is a red flag).

Breeder sells him the chocolate, complete with AKC papers. All he told him was that the dog could not compete for shows because of an overbite (not that we care, he was just disclosing it).

Two days after Christmas our MIL has the pup and notices limping. All the time, limping. Had x-rays run and the vet stated that it's the most severe case of hip dysplasia he has seen in a lab, which they are highly susceptible of getting. He said that both hips would need to be replaced.

Does anyone here have any suggestions on what recourse, if any, there is in this situation? I believe she is collecting information from the vets and writing a letter to the breeder. I'm not sure there's anything that can be done.

Doubt the breeder knew. Hip dysplasia doesnt pop up that early on and isnt really screened for

If she loves the dog then just deal with it

She noticed it after having the dog for 2 days after Christmas. The dog was already 7 months old when she got her.

Many breeders if they respect the breed and their reputation will take dogs that have major issues back.

Of course, now your MIL is all attached.

Not sure what the breeder will do without giving the dog back.

Tell him you want your money back. Standard procedure.

My old roommate's dog had a single HD surgery done at LSU, and ended up being 100% after 6 months. He was 4 or 5 at the time. Was much faster than he'd ever been

Call the police to report a minor noise disturbance. Problem solved. Problem staying solved.

Hell, they might even "take care" of your MIL too...that's a bonus.

You don't know what you are talking about. Some breeders guarantee hips and eyes in their bloodline.

Will definitely pass this along, as you and others have suggested. Thanks

While I am not a "breeder" we did breed our lab last spring and I sold 10 pups. Unless you have a written guarantee the seller isn't obligated. Sucks. My guarantee was to give the dog back and get your money back or keep the dog and get 1/2 back once dog was neutered. Of course we had a lot of health clearances done and there was pretty much no chance the pups would have severe dysplasia. I'd contact seller. Maybe they'll offer something similar. It's pretty standard for Labradors. Good luck with that and the pup.

Stop buying dogs inbred for a profit and go get a dog from a rescue. They're usually healthier anyway.

Nothing you can do. I have a GSP that has the same problem and we didn't find out until she was about the same age. Breeder told me to go pound sand when I called them about it.

If the breeder would even take the dog back what would potentially happen to the pup? That would be my worry but I'm a softie and love animals.

OP - there are puppy lemon laws in some states. They will often require the seller to either take the dog back or pay for the treatment required but you should take action and soon. Try to look up the laws for your state - hopefully they exist there.

And yes, HD is screened for - any decent breeder can provide you with OFA approval of the hips/elbows and CERF approval of the eyes of both parent dogs.

If you're not gonna keep these dogs, it will be a death sentence for them.

guess your right.... so now i should blame the owner for not doing his homework and buying a dog from a piece of shite.

people always knock on people who buy from "show" dog lines.... you want a guarantee, buy from them.
