Louisiana state and local governments wasted or missed out on a combined $642 million in 2019, according to the state legislative auditor’s year-end report released this week.
The annual report is designed to demonstrate trends to lawmakers, who enter their regular legislative session next month. Some of the issues identified were also identified in the last two year-end reports, indicating progress toward correction has not been made.

In addition, the government’s official watchdog writes that Louisiana colleges and universities need to improve their bookkeeping so that students are not overcharged or undercharged fees and tuition
need more tax money
remember this when JBE tells you we need to pay a little bit more to get those nice roads or fund higher ed.

That’s probably the contingency of what they expected to lose. So it’s actually like 5x that amount.

When democrats have power they raise taxes and everybody eats.

I especially like this part:
wonder how much of the missing money is going to the same legislators who aren't doing anything about the missing money?

Here’s another opportunity for Jon Bel to hire one of his buddies to study the problem.

This alone should be enough to crater JBE, but nah.

So much about this pisses me off.
More so than many other posters, I'm ok with government providing medical care for the poor. For the poor. The real poor. Real medical care. If you can afford your own care, you don't need Medicaid. And if you are charging the state for services not provided, no.
Supposed institutions of higher learning that can't figure this out. How embarrassing.
We have waaaay too many local governments that are just jobs programs or slush funds or straight up giveaways. These accounting functions are things a first year accounting undergrad student can figure out.
And the LLA? As a watchdog?
Of the 7 assistant legislative auditors... 3 of them aren't even CPAs.

The auditor points to a handful of key issues, noting Louisiana’s “ongoing struggle to make sure the Medicaid program is paying only for services that actually have been delivered, and to ensure that only eligible individuals are receiving Medicaid services.”

The auditor also slams a number of local governments for similar problems, noting that a number of repeat offenders are on the “edge of financial collapse.”
“Auditors continue to find non-compliance with state laws related to budgets; failure to reconcile bank accounts; errors in accounting records; deficits in general funds and other funds; and misappropriation of money and assets. The overall effect is the loss of much-needed revenue at the local level.”
