It absolutely blows my mind that people would donate to this campaign, even though the sponsor has no obligation to give it to the family.
I tend to agree, but having a sponsor with a show on HBO helps lend some credibility to the campaign. I'd be much, much more skeptical if it was created by a "community organizer" in BR or something like that.

Good point. I'm sure that adds a level of credibility to her campaign.
I just really can't wrap my head around how people are willing to give money to someone who has no legal obligation to use it as advertised.
I would much rather see people give money to credible and established institutions, but whatever, none of my business (or money).
I mean whats to stop the organizer from going the Hillary Clinton route and setting up a trust or foundation with the intent of benefiting the kids, and just milking it for "management fees" and "travel expenses?"

I'm not sure if they have "no legal obligation" though. I'd imagine fraud charges could be brought against a campaign.
This campaign is now one of the Top 20 highest earning campaigns in GoFundMe history. Hopefully that brings with it a certain level of scrutiny and oversight. At a bare minimum I'm sure the IRS will be interested.

If even one of his children ever sets foot on a campus as anything even remotely resembling a student I will be anazed.

That's absolutely one of the shittiest things ever posted on this board.
Congrats.

Maybe, but who knows what kind of involvement he had in their life. He was obviously a felon and spent years in jail, and if he was absent in their lives while he was free, his death could provide a catalyst and opportunity to better themselves that they wouldn't otherwise have.
I understand the comment was probably made in jest, but there could be some truth to it.

quote:...wow, what a Good Samaritan. She needs to set one up for Alton Sterling's victims now.
A GoFundMe.com page was set up Wednesday by Issa Rae, a YouTube celebrity who has advocated for more entertainment roles for black women. “If you feel helpless, but want to play a small part in easing the burden of #AltonSterling’s family, consider donating to this scholarship fund for his 15-year-old son (and his other kids),” Rae wrote. She said all funds raised would go to Sterling’s family.

Who knows. The best thing going for this campaign is that it is sponsored by a person who will be in an upcoming HBO show, so hopefully she'll be a better custodian of the money than a family member may have been.

Because people will hold some obscure HBO character accountable when it's time for the kids to go to college right?

Looks like he did his kids a favor by getting offed. It's a certainty he was never gonna make that much selling bootleg CDs for the rest of his natural life.

no doubt about it. she'll be one of those who are playing the machine they are sitting at, and the ones on either side of her all at once.
