An international team of scientists say they have identified a shark which might have been born around 400 years ago. It would make the Greenland shark the longest-living vertebrate known on Earth. The findings have been published in the journal, Science.

I saw the TV news report. I think it said 5 Greenland sharks had been accidentally caught in fishing nets.

By, "scientists," they mean pharma-engineers.

Did they count its rings? How could they possibly age a shark to 400 years? I'm not saying they can't, just want to know how without clicking the link.

What kind of fish is trailing it in the bottom left of picture?

Born before George Washington. Mind blown.

Vertebrae contain concentric pairs of opaque and translucent bands. Band pairs are counted like rings on a tree and then an age assigned to the shark based on the count. Thus, if the vertebrae has 10 band pairs, it is assumed to be 10 years old. Recent studies, however, have shown that this assumption is not always correct.
Researchers must therefore study each species and size class to determine how often the band pairs are deposited because the deposition rate may change over time. Determining the actual rate that the bands are deposited is called "validation".
ETA: TL;dr: rings in back bones. and no, i didnt write it.

Most fish are aged by otoliths which are the "ear" bones
