What I don't understand is why everyone ignores all the other dogs on the list.
Kill every dog from the breed who holds the #1 spot, but what about #2?
I think this is what you're looking for to clarify.
Family dogs inflicted 45% (14) of all deaths in 2016; family pit bulls accounted for 86% (12) of these deaths, up from an 11-year average of 63%. Of the 22 fatal pit bull attacks, 55% (12) involved a family or household member vs. 45% (10) non-family.
So breaking that down further, pitbulls accounted for 22 deaths. 12 family deaths.
12/22 = 55%.
All other breads of dogs = 2/9 = 22%
So in my mind, this means pitbulls were more likely to kill their owners (55%) than someone else.
Other breeds killed 78% non-owners. (7 total)
That's probably why we aren't worried about other breeds.
I'm not saying pits are an epidemic. But saying there isn't something wrong with them is disingenuous at best.

This is a pretty good answer. The only thing I disagree with is suggesting there is something inherently wrong with the breed. To add a little complexity to the issue, lots of animals are labeled as pit bulls when they are not. That's something I feel is worthy of considering. When discussing such a small number of incidents, just a handful of dogs that are misrepresented can impact the statistics in a huge way.
As you can probably imagine a lot of people own a pit bull type dogs for long periods of time with zero issues. I just lost mine, she was with us for 13 years and we were heart broken when her time ran out. She lived a life that was expressive and worthy of living. So while I respect your opinion, it's the others who call people trash and talk about shooting animals who make the discussion counter productive and galvanize people on both sides of the issue.

It’s at least two or three times a week where we see a story where a pit bull has either severely mauled if not killed someone, usually a small child
And then a few days later the same paper has a retraction where they say oops it was a german shepherd, not a pit bull. But they knew that bc Pit Bull gets clicks

This is very true. So that probably skews the numbers. I really don't know.

I've always heard this, although haven't taken the time to research it, so it very possibly might be inaccurate. I've specifically heard they can just snap and advanced age makes it more likely.

I have an uncle who swears the best, most loyal dog he ever owned was a pit.
I also have a very good friend who was fishing at his pond one day and his snapped and he had to drown her to keep her from killing him. It was a very emotional and confusing incident.
I don't want to insult anyone with pits. Someone asks for some stats and I presented them. I like stats on any topic.
My personal opinion is I wouldn't have one though. And I wouldn't let my three year old hang off one like he does our dog. Those are my personal feelings.

Love these threads where the ignorant spew their anecdotal data and personal stories despite dog behavior experts, studies and the most renowned organizations who say its not the breed. Op has an agenda. Dogs aren't the problem. Shitty humans are. It's no different than a gun owner leaving his gun out or a parent leaving their painkillers out for their kids to get.
People want strong fighting dogs so they breed two strong fighting dogs with each other and more than likely there will be a few dogs in that litter that is stronger than their parents. Then there are those who don't give a frick about the bloodline so they breed dogs from the same litter, etc.. So whether it's a "trashy human" or some normal person who just don't really know about the breed, the dog is a threat.
And those who decide to own them should be like people who own guns. You don't do stupid shite that will put people in harm's way, but you say it like "well people die from gunshots and ODing on painkillers so frick it. why does it matter if people carelessly own these dogs?".
