Americans don’t have any business in Mexican border towns. You get what you get.
I got lunch the one time I went, but that was back in 2001 or 2002. Felt 1000x more unsafe on the ranch we were hunting in Texas than it did in the city.

every saturday we would take the bus to the border, and cross on foot. Lots of fun things for a 16-17 year old to do back in 1990 in matamoras.
After Matamoros, we went to Nuevo Progresso and crossed on foot... felt a lot safer and still plenty to do.

Everyone regardless of whether you're in the drug trade or not are targets.
Yep. Remember the guy who decided he would ride his motorbike down to the World Cup and vlog his way through the parts of Central America that tourists avoid?
Yeah, he didn't make it far. They found him cut up trash bags in some Mexican sh*thole. Turns out having a motorbike and a wallet full of cash makes you a target.

Crossing into Matamoros, not exactly a tourist hotspot, in a van with North Carolina plates? There's definitely more to this story.

Matamoras is the dirtiest place I've ever been
I would eat food off the ground on Bourbon before eating at a restaurant in Matamoras

Matamoras is where that med student was found years ago cut up in various offering parts to ward of DEA/FBI.
I was down there for spring break in HS the week after UT's break when he went missing. There were missing person signs everywhere and we didn't learn the story until weeks after.
The border towns were reasonably safe back then if you stayed in line and didn't do anything stupid. Kind of a Mexican Bourbon Street. You could have a damn good time in Matamoras, Nuevo Laredo, and Ciudad Acuna. I would never go over there now.

I'll be in Matamoros next week as we have a production site there. Prayers are welcomed.

Back in 1990/91 my cousins and I were 17 y.o. underage kids looking to go party and frequent bars in Matamoros. He lived in the Rio Grande Valley and would take less than an hour to drive down there. We would return on the same night blitzed b/c in Mexico they never asked for an ID. Totally irresponsible on our part now that I look back as a parent.
Just an idea how safe Matamoros was back in the day. My aunt would do her massive Xmas shopping there b/c of the bargain prices and frequent restaurants. I'm talking about 1985-1991 era. Good times.
Now I would not step a foot in that country.

there are still some cool/safe places to go in Mexico, I spent a week in Cabo in November and it was awesome, the border towns not so much, I used to do a lot of white wing hunting in Mexico near a lot of the Tex/Mex borders and it was a really good experience, people were friendly, food was great, everything was dirt cheap, couldn't pay me to do that these days

We used to cross the river and buy a case of Mexican cokes for $2

My grandma, aunts/uncles, cousins lived in Harlingen from '83 til '92. Would spend the summers there and a couple of X-mases, great memories. Often visited Brownsville & McAllen, ideal place for kids, teens and retirees.
Also, cheapest real estate in America. Can't beat that.

This, because I've always had the understanding that the Cartels wouldn't normally mess with Americans. Obviously there were some circumstances where Americans were murdered, but doing so brings unwanted attention.
Never say never, but I remember seeing a YouTube of some obviously clueless tourists rolling up on a cartel roadblock. After some routine questions they let them on through without a hassle.

We lived in Harlingen from 1992-1995. Same. Cokes and antibiotics!
We crossed into Matamoros, Reynosa, and Nuevo Progreso a lot. We were reasonably cautious and never had any difficulty. Would definitely not do that now or at any time the last ten years.
We had a great time down there. Mid-20s, just married, no kids. Between the island and Mexico it was pretty great.

Us, too. The last time I went down there was 1994 (I was 13), my siblings still go often. Most of my family that lived down there are either dead or in Houston
