On January 28, 1986, the NASA Space Shuttle orbiter undertaking mission STS-51-L and the tenth flight of Space Shuttle Challenger (OV-099) broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, killing all seven crew members: five NASA astronauts, one payload specialist, and a civilian school teacher. The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 11:39 a.m. EST (16:39 UTC). The disintegration of the vehicle began after a joint in its right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed at liftoff. The failure was caused by the failure of O-ring seals used in the joint that were not designed to handle the unusually cold conditions that existed at this launch. The seals' failure caused a breach in the SRB joint, allowing pressurized burning gas from within the solid rocket motor to reach the outside and impinge upon the adjacent SRB aft field joint attachment hardware and external fuel tank. This led to the separation of the right-hand SRB's aft field joint attachment and the structural failure of the external tank. Aerodynamic forces broke up the orbiter.

I can still remember where I was when I heard the news.

Reagan's speech was one of his best.

To say Morton Thiokol and NASA management fricked up here would be the understatement of the century.

Wouldn't be the last time, unfortunately.

And at least some of the crew was conscious during the 2 minute plummet to the ocean when their compartment separated from the shuttle.
God bless those souls.

I meant MT's management as well more than their engineers that pleaded for the shuttle to stay on the ground.

I was in the 4th grade. I remember that being a very heavy day for teachers with the loss of McAuliffe.

As for Reagan...I was born in 76' so I wasn't too in-tune with his politics, but he was the president during a big part of my childhood and as a result will always be the first person I think of when I think "President of the United States".

same for pax and crew of PA 103 and TWA 800

ETA: I witnessed the PA 759 crash and actually went to the site, often wonder what the thoughts of those that knew what was happening were

Nixon had a good one for Apollo 11 in case it didn't return.

I was in 2nd grade. Our TA rushed into the room to tell our teacher.

It was one of 3 times in my school career I watched live TV

1. Challenger
2. OKC Bombing
3. OJ verdict

I left school early to go watch the coverage. Sad day. Still remember watching the streaking shuttle when it would land in Florida and fly over the southern part of the country

I was at boarding school, in the cigarette room, looking at some of the richer kids' wearing their super bowl 20 tee shirts that they got at the game, when this report came on TV.

That forked smoke trail video image is burned into my brain.

Stationed in Orlando, you could hear the shuttle’s double boom as it flew over and approached KSC

Reagan
quote:

first person I think of when I think "President of the United States".

Greatest President of the 20th century and the greatest president of my lifetime.

I am not a man given to hero worship. However, he is literally a hero in my eyes.

The only time in my life I felt actual sadness when a famous person died. So much so, I wept while watching his funeral.

What a President of the United States. He was more than the President. He was our leader.

He has statues built to honor him in former Iron Curtain countries.

Unveiled this past November at the Berlin Wall to honor the man who brought it down.
