Here is the first satellite imagery of the damage, compiled between 8/30/2005 and 9/8/2005.

I've always wondered what the casinos did. Everything was still coin based I think. So I've always assumed at some point they decided to close up and pull every coin out of the place. Which had to be crazy for places that hadn't actually been closed in decades.

I drove around both areas - NOLA and coastal MS on Super Bowl Sunday after Katrina which was a tad more than five months later. I have to say that both places looked like an untouched war zone and I can’t say that there was one location that was worse than the other. They were both destroyed in a way that left my wife and I both completely speechless.

And people are still building expensive homes in that same path. Camile, Katrina. Gambling isn't only found in MS Coast casinos.

It was Katrina coverage that gave us the “landmass” memes.

IIRC that was opening weekend for the Hard Rock. Had to start over on land before they made their first $.

We evacuated to Destin and I remember that morning we went out to the beach and the wind and sand were blowing so hard not realizing at that very moment Biloxi and the Gulf Coast were being destroyed.
