That’s wild. I never knew there were so many unidentified victims. It makes sense, just never thought about it.
Same. Kinda gives a completely new perspective on what the victims families have been through and experienced.
ETA: also a little surprised that NYC metro is responsible for IDing and not a federal authority.

The three new victim identifications were the result of "ongoing outreach to families for DNA reference samples," the announcement said, which were then analyzed by OCME using advanced DNA technology and compared to the victims' remains, which were recovered in 2001 and 2002.
This makes it sound like the medical examiner had been asking for samples from the family since it happened and the family finally submitted them...

Somehow they voted Democrat in 2020. Biden got the most votes ever!

This is very haunting and disturbing. Those buildings coming down like they did caused way more than just massive destruction, it vaporized people to the point we could not even recover them… I still have awful thoughts about that day that changed the world as we knew it….
Working Stiff is a great book by a famous forensic pathologist who did her fellowship during that year. Her description of some of the bodies is pretty sad. Well worth the read though.

DNA technology has gotten a lot better in the last 24 years. I took a tour of the 9/11 museum last year (highly recommend) and they said that all the remains are onsite and constantly being analyzed for new identifications.

Absolutely phenomenal book. I read the entire thing in a day. Includes way more than 9/11 cases she worked on but the description of a leg of a victim from the WTC being brought in with a Glock completely melted into it was something that stayed with me long after I read it. That and the guy who was pushed into a manhole and boiled alive like a lobster

I’m assuming these are “official” identifications?
The families and officials have known they died there since the beginning?
