Crazy it’s been that long already.

Makes me think about how BR has never been the same since Katrina as well (and not for the better).

The way I understand it, Bush had the national guard and FEMA staged to come into the state prior to landfall. However, the president can’t simply order the national guard into a state, the governor has to request/allow the aid.

The governors of the neighboring states requested federal help prior to the storm but Blanco said LA would handle it.

The president came down after the storm and specifically asked Blanco for permission. She resisted until the state granted the cleanup/recovery oversight contract to the company her husband was involved with. Once that was done, and FEMA had to abide by that contract, she “allowed “ federal help. 3 days after the storm.

You are probably correct, but all that procedural bullshite needed to have been thrown out the window and had someone with common sense take control.
The hospitals that had people inside suffering could have been evacuated by military writhing a day or two.
I know nothing like Katrina had ever happened, but playing political games was pitiful

Before Katrina, the big fear from hurricanes was storm surge overtopping the levees along the lake. Nobody worried about canal wall collapses.

Part of the aftermath of Katrina cleaned up a lot of how FEMA worked and changed the understanding of how federal and state agencies interact.

It's impossible to not turn the discussion into petty political shite but the a lot of other states learned from Louisiana on emergency preparedness. The event also shifted a ton of responsibility to a federal agency that had previously only been in a position to manage everyone.
