A flight on its way to Egypt ended in a fatal crash back in 2016, and a new investigation reveals it all came down to one cigarette. The report, viewed exclusively by Italian news organization Corriere Della Sera, concludes Pilot, Ali Ali Shoukair, lit a cigarette in the cockpit of an EgyptAir flight, causing oxygen that was leaking from an emergency mask to burst into flames.

quote:

Egyptian pilots smoked frequently in the cockpit, and it wasn't banned 6 years ago, at the time of the crash.

quote:

All 66 passengers and crew on board died when the Airbus A320 -- traveling from Paris to Cairo -- crashed into the Mediterranean Sea ... the plane violently swerved back and forth before spiraling downward.

I'm probably confusing this with another, I thought there was audio of one pilot forcing it down. Is TMZ a reliable source for this?

Rookie mistake.

Everybody knows you're supposed to stop, drop, and roll.

They're fairly accurate when reporting actual news.

Those poor people. I'm amazed that smoking was ever allowed anywhere on airplanes.

Are you thinking of the Germanwings crash?

Oh you’re probably thinking of this crash in 1999

quote:

The co-pilot of EgyptAir Flight 990, which crashed off New England in 1999, killing 217 people, deliberately crashed the plane as an act of revenge, according to a source close to the investigation.

We used to smoke in the cockpit of the 727 we flew all the time back in the late 90’s. It was a cargo operation so no passengers. Never had a fire.

Sounds like this was done by some independent report, not the official French BEA. Not sure how conclusive they can really be?

That had something to do with it, too.
