I worry about getting too far into a particular story, but we handled the somewhat infamous NG looting situation. Two NCOs were detained by NOPD in New Orleans East for looting Birdman's house.

Pretty sure I remember he just abandoned that house too in the years post-katrina

Could be misremembering though

These may have been asked.

What is the worst thing that you saw?

What are some things that you saw that restored your faith in humanity?

I'm not sure. I think that was Pat Swilling's house before Birdman.

Some older folks that were unloaded from helicopters Tuesday night. They were helpless and in pretty bad shape.

Things were mostly cleared on Saturday, late morning. A friend and I went to see how bad the aftermath was going to be. A civilian was walking towards the buses. He stopped us, shook our hands and thanked us before getting on the bus.

Hey me neither. It was a "great opportunity for my career" I believe was how it was explained.

That Benny was slicker than snot.

When I was night OIC in November/December - and part of that I guess I was liaison officer, too, the night NCOIC was a 141 guy. He had worked for Popeyes corporate and with Al Copeland himself, back in the day.

It's from this NCO I got my classic line, "That's classy, 'Al Copeland' classy."

On that same mission, at the same time, I worked with a JAG who worked for Leona Helmsley and was acquainted with Donald Trump.

This has been an enjoyable thread to read. Thanks for helping all those people who were clearly in distress.

Was NOPD even remotely still in existence in the weeks after the storm? I’m assuming fire and EMS were also probably nonexistent?

I worked for Delta Queen Steamboat Co. as Director of Marine Ops. I arrived to Robin St Wharf on 9/8/25 (by tug boat) and found Nevada National Guard in formation on the dock. Had NOPD Traffic and Tactical in the warehouse and Third district in our call center. NOPD was exhausted but functional. Next 3 months was crazy. To many stories to tell.

Quick derail: Yes, it still is too.

I actually got contacted about a year ago by a REI group I do some consulting for. When I looked up the address I didn’t even run the numbers I told them it was a stupid investment and to run quickly in the other direction.

As well as expected, I suppose.

(I think you said like October-December?)

Anything interesting or notable during that timeframe or was it pretty much typical hurricane cleanup/recovery at that point?

While this was not directed at me here is my input.

This was a wild time to be in New Orleans. The Westbank and Algiers were partially functioning. Pockets of UPT and then the quarter and CBD. We were gutting houses during the day and making money hand over fist. The quarter was nothing but locals, NG, and media, and construction people and made for some wild nights out. We would go to Maple St. till curfew and then have NOPD or NG follow us back to the bridge absolutely hammered. If you turned off to a side street at night it was like driving into a black hole.

I do remember how dark the streets were at night. Inky black. Like, "There could be literally anything in this dark "

It was the same thing on interstate especially heading to the East. You could find an entire kitchen cabinet set covering two lanes coming at you out of the darkness.

Yeah and we know a dude who was high up 256 at the time .. was flying after Rita with Landrieu (and others) who we were told said she wanted them to look “for a photo op”. No reason for this dude to make that up. Smh.

Don't know or can't say. You decide.
