Thanks, I'll cede to your obvious knowledge and expertise on the subject.
He just came across to me as somewhat of a loudmouth, so I always wondered if he was really an effective leader.

I do not have first hand evidence of anything. I never talked to the crew who took him to his house. The guys that pulled them out didn't know anything. So, that's it for that.
However, I also heard, second hand, that he was frantic that the FBI had a warrant for his house and offices in New Orleans. And that they would serve them during the crisis. Recall they had raided his house in Washington 4 weeks before the storm hit New Orleans.
Federal resources were yet sparse and he had already sent some request that reached us to go "inspect his home for damage". This was on Tuesday or Wednesday after the storm. He went around us, through Nagin and got his "inspection", anyway.
Interesting times. Mitch Landrieu tried to flex during this time, too. That's a whole other story.

An NCO that was like a brother to me had the same opinion and more direct contact with him.
I literally saw Honore 3 times, all around the helicopter landing area of the parking deck and I only heard his voice 1 time at the Dome. Like I said, he was in charge of the federal effort and I was on the state side.

Of the famous pictures of the disaster, I am almost certainly in this one or at least in an identifiable structure not named the Superdome.

Was the Lt. General in charge really a difference maker when he got there?
LOL. No! Total media creation.
The biggest help was the Texas NG when they brought over a command tent with communications in the first few days.
By the time he got there with the 82nd everyone had been evacuated from the Superdome. They mainly just patrolled around for video (they brought their own public affairs unit to film!) and waited for the pumps to get the water down.
Before Katrina hurricanes were usually a 3-5 day operation post landfall. Stuff gets knocked down in roads, we clear the roads, go home. Everyone only planned on being down there for maybe a week.
The flooding resulted in the State HQs in Jackson Barracks basically being evacuated with everyone else. We were wearing uniforms, but pretty much had the same resources as the people bring evacuated from the 9th Ward.
One of the most surreal moments was the next morning when the TAG (two star commander of the State) and his staff huddled up on to of the parking garage to conduct a "staff meeting". Basically five high ranking officers with 30 curious soldiers around them listening in. Phones all down, radios all down, we had one communication van that was using satellites (I guess). I've never seen the military that cut off before.

During your days there, how many gunshots did you hear?

I heard what I thought were gunshots once. I had troops sleeping under the helicopter landing spot that reported gunfire in their direction from the city.
But, since there were helicopters coming and going at all hours, there were very few times of quiet where one could hear remote sounds.
Now, when we returned to the city, I was never "on the street", so to speak. I worked out of a building I doubt I could have heard tank fire just outside. It was almost too quiet and very cold (November and December).

I want to be careful, because I have no idea as to what Mitch's specific input was. But someone was dropping his title like it was a magic word.
Without getting too specific, there was a critical mission request. We would have run the mission if we could - everything was potentially life or death at that point in the operation - Tuesday night (day after the storm passed) and this definitely qualified.
So, this officer comes down - I barely knew him. He was under federal indictment for misuse of emergency funds from a prior emergency. I thought he was the sleaziest dude in the guard at the time. There was this tall, young lieutenant with him that I had literally never seen before. Back to the officer, we'll call him LTC F. F said " The lieutenant governor has interest in this request", "The lieutenant governor would consider this a favor", "The lieutenant governor feels strongly", etc.
It was off-putting in the worst way. This wasn't trivial. We weren't being arbitrary. We didn't want favors for doing the right thing. We just didn't have the assets at that time.
While I don't know that Mitch sent indictment boy down to talk to us, I bet he did.

What were your responsibilities/day to day roles when you came back (I think you said like October-December?)
Anything interesting or notable during that timeframe or was it pretty much typical hurricane cleanup/recovery at that point?

Night OIC for a headquarters element.

I worry about getting too far into a particular story, but we handled the somewhat infamous NG looting situation. Two NCOs were detained by NOPD in New Orleans East for looting Birdman's house.
That made national news.

I hate to seem so negative towards this guy, but man he was hard to like. I had a good friend caught up in that and was an unindicted co-conspirator in the same bigger case.

Another positive memory was when Outback opened back up. Half price if we were in uniform, so an Outback Special combo was out the door, with tip, $10 or $11.
Good times...

I wasn't in the 256th at that time. They did come back and were involved in Katrina/Rita recovery in November and December.
