And what was the cleanup and rebuild aspect like?
It was a massive undertaking and literally took years. Some residents might suggest it was ongoing, even today
Imagine entire nighorhoods with ruined appliances, furniture, carpet, drywall stacked up for miles and miles.

Was the Lt. General in charge really a difference maker when he got there?
The resources he brought with him were significant. There was the big split, though. He ran the federal side. I was on the state side.

On Sunday, I went from Carville in a HMMWV and dropped off a troop at the Dome. The rest of us went to JB. I was at the Troop Command building setting up operations when the higher ups decided to move us all to Building 35.
After JB flooded, we went by Blackhawk to the Dome. I didn't leave JB until after dark, by boat to the levee for the pickup
(ETA if you knew the young E-8 whose father was an O-6, I was in his unit.)

I remember going up to that little balcony/roof spot around noon on Monday and watching the HMMWVs floating around. On a bright sunny day.
I had to leave a young troop behind at 35, too. I didn't feel good about that until I saw him again.

How much of a pain in the arse was the media?

One of the funnier stories from the first week (because it was mostly negative), I can share was the "Spaceballs" moment.
By Wednesday, obviously it was the biggest news story of the year - one of the biggest since 9/11, so one of the biggest of the decade, even. We were used to helicopter traffic being incessant. (Folks who gave Nagin grief for his helicopter comment - you weren't there so you can't understand the sentiment.)
Anyway, the helicopters we had seen thus far were mainly Blackhawks and Coasties. A few smaller birds bringing in VIPs and stuff had happened on Monday and Tuesday (and, my own trip to the Dome had been by Blackhawk, Monday night). By Wednesday, there were scads of news helicopters getting footage. They were everywhere, hovering around. We had an airmobile tent set up Wednesday as a briefing room. They had a big screen TV in there and had Fox News on. So there we were, looking at ourselves on TV, then looking up at the helicopters filming, then back at the TV.
The entire situation was so surreal, I simply would not believe it now if I was not there at the time.

LTG Honore sitting around looking at his Blackberry only to get up when reporters came around for a sound bite.
Had the unfortunate experience to have to listen to him at a work event. That guy is an idiot.
Funny how they wanted to hang their hat on that guy to be the next environmental activist.
Within 5 seconds of hearing him speak you can tell he knows nothing except what he’s been told to repeat.

That was other people's problem. I wasn't a muckity muck. I was within earshot when (then colonel) Tom Beron gave a brief interview. That was as close as I got, thankfully.
(ETA: I had opportunities to talk to Pat Simon about it, later, but I never got into it with him.)

It was hard to sleep at night with the non-stop helicopters and the gunshots (Kept the windows open as they did not use the generators for AC at night where I was staying).

I was fortunate - my post had AC starting Tuesday night. I do remember spending at least 1 night or maybe 2 (Sunday and maybe Saturday before Labor Day) on a cot in the parking garage, but that was after the dome was cleared. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, I slept in AC.
That was not something most folks had at the dome, for sure.

Unpopular opinion, but that guy was a goofball.
By the time he "got in charge" yelling from the back of a Humvee, things were getting somewhat worked out.
I doubt he ever made much of an impact, hete or in his career. JMO.

His arrival coincided with an influx of men and material. I have no doubt he added something via his leadership. The miracle wasn't Honore, though, it was resources.
The decision for headquarters to ride out the storm at Jackson Barracks remains a critical one. It cost the State roughly a full day just to relocate. If operations were running out of Carville, yes there would have been some delays in communication, but we could have been much more proactive all day on Monday instead of evacuating JB under disaster conditions. That could be an entirely different story for an entirely different time.
