The girl lost consciousness after she choked on food just after 12 p.m., according to a statement from seminary spokesman Gary Myers posted at baptistmessage.com. Isabella Magee, 2 years and 4 months old, was identified by the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office Friday as the child who died. The office stated the cause and manner of Isabella's death remains under investigation.

This kind of thing simply can't happen.

I just read about this. My wife miscarried once and was in a deep, dark depression for six months. I’m not sure she’d survive something like this. Feel horrible for that family.

Its quick. My daughter choked at that age. My wife and I are both trained in child CPR and response. Me from my my job and she used to be a teacher and she received training there.

My wife was able to clear the obstruction before I even got over there.

You can YouTube how to do basic child CPR if you can't make it to a training class. Its worth it.

So little that girl is it breaks my heart.

Of course it can. All it takes is for someone to look away for a moment.

Kids choke, parents and guardians need to make sure foods that you or I can eat are small for kids.

Spaghetti is cut
Grapes are quartered

things like that matter.

Why'd they release the child's name?

Actually what he means is there should have been personnel there trained to quickly handle a situation like that.

Yep. It's most likely a requirement that everyone there is trained in child CPR, so yeah, this shouldn't ever be a reason a child dies in day care. You put them in day care, assuming that they will be protected from something like this.

I cant even imagine.

But it can happen quick when the airway is completely blocked. Had one choke when the end of a teething biscuit broke off and completely blocked his airway. Just glad I was close by.

Is a daycare not required by law to have at least one person there who can perform first aid?

Not saying that's a guarantee but catching a choking child quickly with a back slap is usually effective. Better than nothing, for sure.

Choking on food at daycare isn't acceptable. If a child is supervised while eating, and the supervisor is properly trained (as he/she should be), choking should never happen.

I've been to a handful of daycares in the past couple months because we are having our first born in April. All the directors have said that all personnel that are with the children are state certified for CPR and other safety certs. I thought it was pretty standard

For a 2 year old (really anyone) you should clear the obstruction first. Proper precautions and proper training should render the chance of a chocking death at school to zero.

If a child chokes on a piece of a toy or something like that, it would be more understandable. Choking on food at lunch indicates a corner was likely cut somewhere.
